Take the original ps3 drive and place it into the WD passport case.

Now you have a 250 GB drive in your PS3 and a working 40, 60 or 80 GB external drive depending on what ps3 unit you purchased.

I did mine and it works great.

Or go to Best Buy as this week they have the 320GB Passport for 149.99! I did that two weeks ago and it worked great!

as long as you use compatible drives.

There is a 500GB disk for 200 UKP available, the downside is that it is 3mm thicker than normal 2.5in disks... gonna open up see what tolerances I have in there...

Oh the 500GB SATA HDD is made by Hitachi

That's a good point! Those USB drives sip power and have to run off a single USB port. That basically means it has to draw very little power! I'm going to pick up a one to try it out.

Default WD 120GB for $56.99?

I was in my Local Best Buy tonight and they had the WD 120GB 2.5' SATA internal Notebook HDD for $56.99 on clearence. Is this a good Deal?

I immediatly grabbed it but put it back since since it said Notebook and wanted to check here first and it is listed above in the list of recommended Hard Drives

I think I will get it tomorrow unless anyone knows a reason not to???

If you use an external drive, how do you save to it? Surely be default all your demos and videos downloaded from PSN go straight to the internal drive - or do you mean all your own music and videos are stored on the external drive?

Demos, game add-ins save to the internal drive.only...but if you have an external storage installed (usb drive, memory card) you are presented with the option to save trailers etc to whatever device is connected.

P.S. The background downloading only works when saving to the internal drive AFAIK.

Highdef Monster...before installing the new HDD you should go to settings and use the backup utility. You will need an Ext HDD or very large memory stick/flash drive to do this. I upgraded my HDD last week and needed 14GB of space for the back up. I only had a 4GB flash drive so I transfer all my vids and pics to my laptop and deleted a bunch of the game data utility saves to get the back up to fit. The only thing I had to reinstall after the new HDD was installed and updated with the back up was the games that I had downloaded from the PSN. All my othe information PSN ID, billing info Saved game data etc was installed with the Backup.

I am unclear on the answer to this, will the back up tool back up everything and everything? will running the full backup copy all my music pictures, games saves, dowloads & settings? I have heard mixed answers on this, and I understand I might have to redownload stuff which is fine, but I recall others saying that doing a full backup will copy over the downloads and saves also

which is it?

I'd like to know this also. And how do you run the back up once the NEW HDD is installed?

I'm down to 7GB!!!

Okay. Dumb question from a complete newbie. I read in the initial post that the new HDD has to be reformatted before use. Does the PS3 do the reformatting for you once you restart the machine after the HDD replacement?

Yes, after installing and powering up you will be prompted to Format the HDD. It is fairly quick.
