It was okay, for a teaser. Look forward to a full trailer.

I still think Depp would have been a good Lone Ranger, they could have gotten a real Native to be Tonto(Eddie Spears would have been cool)

The film looks great so far though! I'm excited.

I agree.

My only worry here is Verbinski's comments equating Tonto to Jack Sparrow. Fortunately, I don't get that vibe from the teaser. I get a sense that he'll be a badass mentor rather than sidekick. That I can get behind. What I don't want is Tonto being goofy and the Lone Ranger diminished just to placate Pirates fans.

Love it, can't wait for this - Verbinski is an excellent director.

Unfortunately, we DO get that vibe from the plot--
Like Captain S (did he really escape from that island by turtle?), we're not sure whether Tonto really IS a shaman of mystical powers, or just an occasionally comic self-delusional lunatic who tells a good story.
And like Will Turner in Pirates 2&3 (and 4, if they'd continued the Davey Jones arc), we see that John Reid had a wife and kid he had to leave behind to complete his stalwart heroic mission, but, as one alternate choice for studio promotional pitches put it. "it's Tonto who's the smart one to get them out of their situations".

I'm not saying it'll flop-flop before I see any more footage where the characters speak--and how much Rango we actually DO get in it--but in terms of twenty-questions Flop Tests, I'm already applying the Wild Wild West Rule:
"Did the director push the original source material aside to transform it into one of his previous hits or unproduced projects?"

You do get the feel from the teaser that it's Depp in Sparrow form, but it's always going to be that way from now on. Depp's characters are always quirky, always different and unique, and CJS happened to be the one that struck a chord with most audiences - you team up that actor, who made such a big and recognisable personality with one role, the director of that franchise, who actively encourages quirkiness on Depp's part, the producer and studio, and give them material that works towards creating that kind of character again - whether it's intentional or not - you're going to get an end project that gives you some vibes from that previous hit. The problem is audiences are shallow and only want certain changes from previous films they've liked - Disney and Verbinski know that Depp doing what Depp does instantly sells. Whether we like that or not is a moot point - that's what we're getting, and will keep getting, for as long as audiences want it.

And DO they, that's the question?--Hate to break Disney's "$1 billion overseas!" bubble, but I don't recall Pirates 4 exactly making all that much stateside, and most of the reviews suggested that Depp should hang up his compass.
They can hope for overseas, but cowboys don't play as well as pirates.

Not to mention, we've just had Depp unexpectedly falling on his face in one other summer movie that ultimately self-destructed from an overconfident cult-happy director trying to transform a recognized vintage-TV property into something it wasn't, just to keep his own name-marketing reputation going...Two in a row won't exactly look good, catastrophic studio overbudget or no overbudget.

Yes, they do - Pirates 4 may not have made as much money in the States as it did elsewhere, but it raked in enough profit for Disney to want to make another two sequels back-to-back. Companies don't put that amount of money into something unless they're absolutely sure they can make it back, especially Disney. As for film critics, some of them were claiming the series should be retired as far back as the second instalment, which is when things started to go sour on the review front. For as long as the majority of the theatre-going public want to see Depp on screen channeling the spirit of Captain Jack, we'll see him in films like this - and I'm convinced that it won't be soon when we see the end of them.

Westerns have been a big part of cinema since its beginnings, but they have fallen out of favour recently - the exact reasons, I do not know, but audiences don't seem to be wanting to pay to see them. If there's anything that will make this film flop, it's more that people won't want to see a Western, rather than Depp and Verbinski having a problem with character dynamics. Then again, maybe it's high-time Westerns made a come back?

The teaser does have a pirate of Jack feel to it I suppose we won't know just how much of it will be until we actually see the movie in 9 months. I will be seeing it, always ready for a Lone Ranger movie

this just looked weird, but if it has good action and not a bunch of sub plots, then maybe they are onto something.

Oh, I think if any Western does come back in the mainstream, it would be a good, respectful, big-budget Lone Ranger.
A real Lone Ranger, though, not this lazy, weird-@$$ self-indulgent Bruckie-burp.

(Seriously, there's a framing device where the story is told by
[Show spoiler]an aging Tonto in the 30's, who's now retired to a Wild West show, and relating it to a wide-eyed kid in his own radio-Lone-Ranger suit.

That's the movie WE wanted to see, what Verbinski ended up making is....a little off track.)

I agree that Westerns should make a come-back and that it does need the right film to really make it hit home - the source material for Lone Ranger would make a great cinematic treat and, as you say, this one has become more of a mis-match of styles and ideas than a straight-forward adaptation. I'm willing to give this a chance, though, just because I do like the talent involved - I enjoy Depp in almost every film he's in, even if I don't exactly like the film, and Verbinski has done some very good films (especially MouseHunt - love that film!).

I suspect that a full trailer will be released on the internet by April 2013, or May 2013 before The Lone Ranger movies July 3rd 2013 release.

The trailer makes it look kinda generic. Like you could replace the title characters and it wouldn't affect the movie not one bit.

Looks pretty good actually. I think Bruckheimer/Verbinski can just adapt just about anything and make a movie seem exciting.
Nice!
