I know for sure that truth a USB drive they work but there's a specific amount of space for external HD's and as usual Pioneer Canada they don't know nothing . The New 68 i know for a fact that can take up to 4T but older models it's a hit or miss . Were you concerned that the receiver would be unable to read / play back all of the files from a large-capacity external hard drive, i.e. it can only recognize 'x' number of files, even though 'y' number is stored? I don't think I own an external with a capacity greater than 2TB, so I won't be able to provide you with an accurate answer unfortunately.
