Default Blu-ray Component Output Question

Last week I was just about to buy a Panasonic DMP-BD30K player (based on great performance reviews and smaller depth of the case) but thought I should compare it to a Sony BDP-S300 that was connected to a monitor via component cables. I have a 2004, pre-HDMI, Mitsubishi HD Projection TV so component connection is a must.

The Sony looked incredible with the component connection and I could just barley tell a difference with the HDMI connection.

The Panasonic looked virtually the same as the Sony with the HDMI connection. However, the component connection using the same cables looked terrible with vivid ghosting around the characters and figures.

Could this be a problem with the Panasonic or does this unit require you to reprogram the resolution for the component outputs? Thanks.
