So, since this is Walmart we're talking about here and their 3D selection is virtually non-existent... Is it safe to assume that the digibook will only be available for the 2D version? If so, I shall pass.

As much as I love digibooks, same here.

I would think the odds probably suggest just a 2D release, although it wouldn't be that difficult to have both versions in this release. I don't really care, as I'm getting the eventual EE to match this digibook, so it's not a big deal, IMHO.

Tbis is a pretty poor effort from Warner. I mean, the movie is out in less than a month and none of the major retailers have it up for pre-order. Are they just going to put it up last minute? It makes me feel like it's going to be delayed.

It's already been mentioned before, but Amazon's listing says to check back on 2/26 to pre-order. I'm sure that's the official pre-order date for ALL RETAILERS.

I didn't get a good look at whether or not it's 2D or 3D combo.

I have my copy pre-ordered where I work. It's set to arrive 3/14.

After 5 days and countless emails trying to explain to their customer service (apparently run out of India) that I preordered it in January, Amazon promptly removed the preorder abiltiy and then removed the product number from their website. I have an email from them saying that my order should still be processed. I figure I'll probably have to contact them again when it doesn't ship like it is supposed to.

But in their email confusion, it looks like they have promised me the 3D combo pack for $22.05 after tax.

Poor effort, seriously? They've released the artwork. They've announced the features. They've announced when pre-orders go live and the price - what more do you want from WB?

Do we really need more than a month to pre-order something? Especially considering we already know the day that pre-orders go live, because it's posted right on the Amazon listings.

I guess I just don't get the big deal. It's not as though if the pre-order were up today you'd get the discs any sooner. And it's certainly not a limited pressing so you're not gonna miss out if you don't pre-order the second the listing goes live...

At the time I wrote that I wasn't aware of the plan to start pre-orders on the 26th, but yes, most major releases do get pre-order pages live more than a month in advance. Hell, most minor releases do too. . It also seems kind of odd to schedule a date to have it go on sale. Why not just put it up?

I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it, I just think they haven't done a good job at setting up this release compared to most other major ones. The fact that there's been confusion and questions for the past few weeks asking whether it's really coming on March 19th proves as much. Plus, I'm willing to bet most mainstream consumers aren't aware of the 26th pre-order date and are still in the dark of when they can order it.

Most mainstream consumers don't pre-order anything. They just buy it when it shows up on the shelf at Wal Mart or Best Buy. The average person is hardly "in the dark" on anything.

Keep some perspective - we're the nutcases who obsess over release dates, pre-orders, bent slipcover corners and all the other enthusiast-related nonsense that most people don't give two craps about.

So again, I don't see the big deal. WB has set it up just fine to sell a bajillion copies, just like all the other LOTR blu-rays...

If you're fine with poor communication by a company to its consumers, then sure there's no problem.

What's been poor?!?! A pre-order going live a few weeks before a video comes out is somehow poor now? Seriously? When did you need the pre-order to go up to be satisfied? The day after the movie opened? Sheesh, cut them some slack, for heaven's sake..

-They made a huge press announcement that the title was coming.
-They released the cover artwork.
-They provided all the special feature details and specs
-They made a YouTube video promo publicizing the release.
-They told us the selling price.
-The Amazon listing tells us when the pre-order goes live.

So what else, other than having Peter Jackson personally call you with the details, did WB really need to do to satisfy you?

This is why home video companies grew tired of message board people - there's just no pleasing people. You do all that stuff and folks still complain that you're doing a lousy job...
