Take the Robocop remake, for example. On it's own, without the Robocop title it's not a bad movie... but it is horrendous rendition of ROBOCOP, missing the key ingredients that made it special in the first place. Rob Zombie's movies aren't inherently bad movies, and I honestly don't think many people think that they are... Problem is, they are shockingly bad HALLOWEEN movies. The issue for me, is remaking something, but changing everything that made it good in the first place... What's the point? Why take the strongest elements, in the original; The Shape, Laurie, Loomis, the atmosphere, the score and change them? It doesn't make any sense! Surely the point of a remake is to strengthen the weaker areas of the original... to start a fresh timeline and undo the bad sequels a la Resurrection etc. My point is simple. Use what is fundamentally good about the original and build a new STORY around that. |
