My Best Buy and Target both have tons of blu rays. Best Buy has like 7 aisles of them. It depends on your area. If you mean NYC as in actual downtown area, they probably don't sell as well as in the burbs.

But at least we get 29 deleted scenes, which isn't bad! |

If they didn't care at all or had zero interest in DS9, they never would have bothered looking at the film. They would have said, "DS9? Who cares what condition the film is in? We're never doing that! In fact, burn it all! We'll never need it and it costs too much to store the damn stuff anyway!" |

I don't blame them for being cautious, the sales of TNG went through the floor after season one and Enterprise reportedly sold like utter crap. They aren't in this for the fun of it, they want to make money. Hopefully we see a surge in purchases that can convince them DS9 is worth the risk. |

Well if they want to make money, tell some stores to carry these and have them on their shelves! After Season 2, no B&M store within 20 miles of me carried any TNG Season or TNG Stand-alone after the first 6 or so put out on release day were all sold out. So hHow does CBS expect broad-based sales when there isn't broad-based availability? Not everybody buys from Amazon.

Folks, that press release is not final, complete or official. It's just a loose guide sent out to retailers to hint at what's on the set. There's certainly more than 1 audio comm!

With the original series and TNG out on BD, it's made me think a lot about where the franchise fits in to our society today. In an age where even new tech is almost accepted as the new norm, we're less wowed and intrigued by the possibilities of things to come that we saw in Star Trek. And we seem to be less excited to explore the universe and more concerned with trying to find order in and bring peace to our chaotic world.
Is there still a place for Star Trek? The recent movies made some money but they weren't blockbusters by the standards of Hollywood today though even past movies weren't, shockingly. And I bet most viewers of the recent movies were those like me, wanting to feel that excitement again felt as a kid when TNG first premiered (I was 8 and still remember how excited I was). Is this franchise going to go the way of many sci fi franchises and be looked at as being important to television history versus being important to television and society today? Enterprise, with all the promise it had to bring the show back to it's exploratory roots, failed and was cancelled. People said Star Trek needed a break from tv. Is there a place for Star Trek on tv now? Will there ever be again? All those doctors, scientists and astronauts who saw Star Trek and then went into those jobs showed how the show used to impact our society and our world. Will it ever have that impact on our culture again? I'm sure the other series (DS:9 & Voyager) will eventually come out on BD, but with TNG season seven coming out, it feels to me like how I felt the first time the show went off the air, sad. I hope the franchise once again becomes as important as it was with TOS and TNG. I for one hope we'll get a new series that will impact future generations of Americans like TOS and TNG. I just hope there will be a place for Star Trek again beyond just as tv nostalgia. I think, for many reasons, most people have stopped caring about the franchise. For now, guess I'll pop in my TNG BD's and remember what it was like when Star Trek mattered. I hope someone out there can give me hope for the future of the franchise. Remember when people said ST or SW? It won't be long before teens today all say SW and think of ST as something their parents liked and as such, is uncool. That's really, really sad. I long for a day ST is cool again. I really do! Last edited by worldchmps; 09-05-2014 at 11:47 AM. |

But I'm honestly puzzled why you and other people continue to say this, when all indications are that DS9 and Voyager are never going to go HD. It's almost like a religious belief system: "all but guaranteed" "I'm sure" "it'll happen," etc. ??? It is not happening as far as we can tell. Enjoy your TNG in HD, because that's apparently the end of the road for Star Trek TV in HD. Hope I'm wrong, but that's the way it looks right now. Last edited by benbess; 09-05-2014 at 11:18 AM. |

I love Star Trek and still think it's entirely relevant to us today. Whether people want to hear the message that it's preaching, I'm not so sure. It's not just Trek, sci-fi in general is woefully under-represented on TV these days. The network suits are more concerned with reality shows and CSI: Wherever, and all HBO wanna do is have people drink, screw and kill each other.
But Star Trek will always be a cultural touchstone for generations of people for what it means to them, and no-one can take that away. Will it ever "matter" like it once did? Hard to say. Yet it shouldn't be ignored, even in this current world climate. The tech may have caught up in some respects (though warp, transporters, replicators etc are a ways off ![]() |

EDIT: I agree with Geoff's post (although I think HBO manages to put out great stuff despite liberally peppering it all with violence/sex/language). Sci-Fi is definitely in a poor state at the moment. The few shows which show some promise are usually cancelled - and the garbage (or at least very weak output) that the likes of Syfy keep returning can't even hold a candle to shows like Star Trek IMO. I'm not so sure that we can't consider the JJA movies as being blockbusters. It was the highest earning Trek movie at that point and was the seventh highest grossing film of the year in the US. I'm sure there weren't just six blockbusters that year....
![]() It also did very well overseas, taking nearly a third of its total takings in other territories. Trek traditionally, on the big screen at least hasn't always fared that well internationally. The sequel, grossed more than the first movie. I'd say they were pretty huge movies myself. Granted, some of that was the JJA effect, but 2009 was the first time that I can remember a Star Trek movie being mainstream cool. |
