In this interview (around the 3:00 mark) he talks about how DVD basically made LD unwatchable but he hasn't gotten rid of his LDs for what essentially sounds like sentimental value.

I can kind of understand that. I mentioned this when this collection interview came up in the Criterion thread but I've gotten rid of a lot of media over the years that I now wish I'd held onto. Would I spend a lot of time thumbing through issues of Starlog or Dragon? No, but it would be nice to still have them.

I think people might be misinterpreting that too. He might have been saying that he's watched all but 200 or so.

'I probably have not watched more than 200 or so' would be a very clumsy way of saying 'I have more than 200 unwatched movies in my collection' but it would be more consistent with the way he talks about movies and theaters and with somebody that got into designing high-end home theaters by designing his own dedicated home theater room thirty years ago.

That collection is hardly the largest. My collection below is well over 15,000 titles and I've certainly seen bigger collections than mine.

That guy sure made me cringe when he said he had watched 200 of his 15,000 movie collection. If he has that much money he's obviously just bored and looking for his 15 minutes.

Some of them are downright amazing.
I've seen DIY theaters that are far better for watching movies than these palatial auditoriums. Theo's designs can often get waaaaaaaaaaay too ostentatious and garish for my tastes. Many times the screens look dwarfed by all the extravagant knick-knacks.

Put the money into what counts: the acoustics and the equipment. I go into a theater to see a movie with the best presentation possible, not to keep the lights on and stare.

He shouldn't be brow beat for how he spends his money. I agree. But he should maybe be brow beat for fronting on the internet when he has absolutely nothing of deeper merit to say. And it does sound like you're taking this a little too personally.

Considering the MILLIONS of movies that have been made over the last 100 years, yes, I think so.

Yeah I'm sorry but if you own 15,000 movies and have watched 200... You have at least a small problem. Use that money and time for something else. Then again what do I do with my time that's so great

Yes, I personally like DIY theatres like mine too, compared to these fancy ones like on his site. I also get a sense of pride to have built it myself. Mine is nothing fancy but it does it's job.

Half the replies in the thread have been deleted. That said, to a point, I do slightly take offense. People were immediately jumping to conclusions that because this man spends his money a certain way he must not do anything charitable. I would go into it more but it would turn political and that's not allowed.

Also either some of you never read Forbes or you have a distasteful look at the wealthy because features like this are common place. I almost bet if it was Martin Scorsese and not a theater designer no one would have said anything.

Good lord, I think you people might have a problem

I don't have nearly as many movies as that but I do have a lot more than the average person. The way I look at it, buy what you like. I don't buy movies just to say I have x-number of movies, I buy stuff I like to watch. Maybe you enjoy camping instead and spend a small fortune on a motorhome to go camping twice a year. No one finds that odd so why should it be odd when I spent on something I enjoy? I think the key though is enjoyment - if you are buying films you don't like and have no intention of watching just so you can have the biggest collection around, you might want to talk to someone about that. But if you enjoy movies, why not?

All I can say about this gentlemen is that there is a difference between accumulating things vs. having a collection based on knowledge or personal passions. I have no problem with him having all of that, but I also find it very uninteresting, personally.

There *is* something kind of ironic about a lot of decor for a room where you, by definition, keep the lights off when you are in it

If you've ever seen hoarders, this sounds very familiar. It's all about the thrill of the hunt for some people. Seeking, getting the deal, the rush at the point of purchase. The wanting is better than the having. At least he's organized ,I'll give him that. Most hoarders have their stuff in piles.

It does seem to be more of a "I shall have it for the sake of having it" type of symptom rather than "I love this movie and would like it in my permanent collection."

My theater room is not large (about 10' x 14' with the closet doors removed for extra lens throw) but with my front projector, I focused only on performance: creating as much of a black pit as I could for maximum contrast and the image is stunning on my JVC. My room won't win any awards, but does what it is intended.

Fantastic!

Personally, I'd rather have that and maybe a little thematic "flair" on the outside of the theater room proper.

The number of theatrically released feature films which have been made by the major film producing countries is estimated to be far less than one million, it's more around 300000. And most films suck. Even if I had the money I doubt that I would want to own 15000 titles.
