Question Why can't directors give us a collection of shorts in 3D?

Just lke the title suggests, I think that would be great. Just 4 or 5 minute clips showcasing the very best of 3D including pop outs and superb depth. Maybe animated shorts, special effects showcase, whatever. Each director giving their best to wow us. If the likes of James Cameron got involved, imagine what would be possible.

I think the 3D rarities disc has whetted my appetite for even more 'in your face' 3D. It might even get a few more people into 3D if they saw genuine 'floating in front of them' 3D.

Might sound silly to some but I think this would be great.

I would really like to see 2013's 3 x 3d come to blu-ray..it's the closest thing we have now. But it would be nice for the 100th anniversary to have something like 95's Lumiere and Company but using 3-d...

Yeah, imagine a David Lynch 3D short!

I think if we did have something like this, most of us would snap it up very fast.

If it had the same care and passion as 3D rarities, it would be hard to contain myself.

Cool idea; we would need a 3D team of directors who have embraced filming in 3D, and also those filming for 3D and then converting it to strong 3D. The project would have to be funded similar to how they put together The Animatrix, where several different directors contribute their own 3D vision.

Though I don't see it happening any time soon, it would be cool.

The idea came to me when I had friends come over and showed them some scenes from 3D Rarities. (The 'trombone' scene and the 'pie in your face' scene. They asked how come films at the cinema are not that impressive!

I think the loyal fans like ourselves who are sticking by the format deserve another quality disc.
Directors like Cameron, Scorsese, Zemeckis etc.. Who understand what audiences want. Let's have footage shot especially for pop outs and give us outstanding depth.
Just think, it could also be used as archive footage to show folks 100 years from now!

I just wish they'd release more of the 3D shorts that already exist.

Disney released a blu-ray short film collection recently, several of which were originally in 3-D, but apparently missed the opportunity to present them in that format.

The Halas and Batchelor cartoon Owl and the Pussycat, one of the very first 3-D cartoons, also recently released on blu-ray was another missed opportunity.

I wish WB would release a collection of the 3-D Looney Tunes they created, with the 1950s Lumberjack Rabbit and the modern CG Looney Tunes.

Not to mention some of the various theme-park 3-D films. I'm hoping the clout of James Cameron will ensure that the T2 3D short film he directed will see the light of day as a bonus when the T2 feature film gets converted for release.

That would be a start. It needs to be stunning though. A real showcase IMO.
I agree about the T2 short. That would be a huge bonus for us fans.

The T2 3-D short would be a major selling point for any 3D bluray. It was natively shot on 65mm film at 30fps on a massive for the time $60 million dollar budget. It would look incredible.

Getting back to your general idea, I think short subjects can work better for showcasing 3-D technology, so a collection of shorts is ideal. Feature films inevitably want to tone down effects for at least part of the runtime lest they detract from the action. It's sometimes said that after around 20 minutes or so, most audience members stop noticing 3-D anyway.

That compilation of 3D looney tunes sounds cool.
I agree the inclusion of The Theme Park Terminator 3D short film would be a nice selling point for the 3D version, in addition to the fact that Terminator 2 3D is a huge selling point if it's in strong 3D.

I enjoyed 3-D Rarities representing the history of 3D and the fact many of the original 3d filmmakers/stereographers aimed for strong 3D way back then, while avoiding mild 3D as much as possible, understanding that mild 3D is too close to being 2D. Strong 3D is exciting to watch. And Imax 3D wouldn't aim for strong 3D in most of their theme park films if they didn't agree.

I am buying it anyway but it would certainly add to my excitement to get such a feature.

I agree about your second point. Very easy to forget one is watching 3D. Kind of takes away from the point of 3D. Depth is great but it doesn't get audiences talking. Not a great film but Final destination 4 had the right idea with excellent pop out in places. Gravity was probably my best 3D experience in a cinema. I was aware of the 3D at all times.

Like I mentioned, the straight to camera sections with the old hag, trombone player and gunman etc.. We're more impressive than ANYTHING I have seen this year (or any year) with modern films. That stuff was inches from my face lol.

It would be cool to see the 3D short for The Birds from the old Universal Studios Florida attraction Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies. It was supposed to be the opening titles but was never used. I later found out that was false, it was done just for the attraction.
