I like both, for radically different reasons. Man of Steel is a good gritty sci-fi action movie, basically. I don't really care if it's a good Superman movie or not. That end fight goes on forever though and the big Pa Kent scene is stupid as hell.

Superman Returns is a solid nod to the classic Supes and enjoyable, despite lacking a good climax and a horrible Lois Lane casting.

It has a sweet, sad, nostalgic tone that I find really appealing- it's not for everyone, but it really captures the pre-Crisis loneliness of being Superman, the living god who puts aside his personal torment to help others. It's bittersweet, like going to Disneyland at Christmas or something, and captures a really appealing mood and is only worried about being it's own movie. It's totally close-ended and works as a finale to the Christopher Reeve series, which it was not marketed as.

Where it fails is at being a good Superman movie that adapts anything other than the Donner films- it has no sense of scale, of there being any threats in this world other than Luthor, or any reactions from the city about Superman himself; sort an anti-cinematic universe. It was oddly not of it's time and woefully out of touch with the real world concerns in summer 2006, or desires of what an audience hungered for a Superman movie to touch on when it came out. But I still maintain it would have fine and well-received had it come out around 2001 to cap off the old era of superhero films before X-Men kickstarted the Marvel phase. Singer gets crap, and deservedly so, for abandoning X3 to make what is essentially an arthouse vanity project with no real purpose or mission statement, but it still has a touching and endearing quality of its own. A movie doesn't need to have a theme other than "Sometimes life just goes on," but that wasn't tapping into what people were necessarily expecting.

The best way I can put it is, something like Manchester by the Sea is a good sad movie, without a really definable theme and doesn't necessarily touch into any kind of cultural zeitgeist, and that's fine. But you wouldn't position it as a summer tentpole at a time when people are looking for the exact opposite kind of entertainment, and then be surprised when it catches a lot of flack for such.

Agree 100% with all of this. Its a damn shame they didnt green light the sequel because I heard the script was a Monsta!! Got Em!!

Basically the same length as the alleyway fist-fight in THEY LIVE, which was far, far more memorable.

Superman Returns also suffers from just some flat out bad screenwriting. The films is supposed to be linked to the first two Reeve films but gone is the snappy "His Girl Friday" dialogue between Lois and Clark which was part of what made the first film so enjoyable. The whole Lois/Superman/Clark thing comes off like a bad soap opera. They forgot that a Superman film is supposed to be....fun.

Margot Kidder is the best (and sexiest) Lois. Adams is fine and Bosworth ludicrous.

As for Superman Returns, it's so busy being an homage to the Donner original (it's essentially a semi-remake), it renders itself redundant.

Not very attractive?? Yes she was!!! Also the chemistry between her and Reeves was very real and genuine. In MOS I felt there was no chemistry between Cavil & Adams. It felt fake and rushed. Got Em!!

Maybe so but I still felt chemistry between Boswell & Routh unlike MOS. Got Em!!

Clearly, Margot Kidder nailed the character and made it her own in a way that Amy Adams and, especially, Kate Bosworth couldn't hope to replicate, but even as a six year-old child seeing SUPERMAN for the first time, I remember thinking, "Superman could have any woman in the world and he picked that homely looking skeleton?!" If you think Margot Kidder was ever sexy, you behold the world through astonishingly different eyes than me. But her lack of ease on the eyes notwithstanding, she simply is Lois Lane. All others are pretenders.

1. Amy Adams
2. Erica Durance
3. Margot Kidder
4. Teri Hatcher
5. Kate Bosworth
I like them all in the role to some extent though, they all brought something different to it and made it their own

Then she's definitely not a Lois Lane, was wondering why I hadn't heard of her before.

Superman Returns is a frustration for me. I'm a fan of the classic Reeve movies and can even watch 3 and 4. So I appreciate Returns' evident affection for Donner's aesthetic. Bryan Singer put together a loving tribute, and a top notch technical presentation.

On the other hand, it is also TOO MUCH of an homage. Bryan Singer approached it more as a fan than a filmmaker which I believe limited his imagination. Routh was fine as Superman, though I think he was under utilized. Bosworth was just plain WRONG for Lois. Parker Posey would have made a better Lois than Luthor's babe. Spacey however was spot on as Lex Luthor.

I do also think the action feels more obligatory than exhilarating. The plane sequence was impressive, but beyond that there just wasn't enough wow factor.

The running time is also strenuous at 154 minutes. It could have used a much tighter pace. There's an alternate opening scene of Superman in his ship scoping out the ruins of his home world. They should have kept it in as it was a much better intro for Kal El. If anything most of the deleted scenes were of better use than what was kept in.

3/5 because it is a competently made film and entertaining to a point, but Singer should have dialed back his fandom and focused on making a more original worthwhile Superman film to justify his "return".
