Default PSP2/PSP-4000 Rumours Megathread. All PSP rumours in here please!

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/ru...-in-the-works/

Quote:
Eurogamer reports that "publishing sources" indicate that Sony is planning to release the PSP-4000 in late '09 and will eventually launch a PSP2. This news is sure to come as a big shock to Sony Europe president David Reeves, who stated last week that there were "currently no plans for a PSP2." Eurogamer sources divulge that titles are currently in development for the unannounced handheld.

Obviously, we hope the PSP-4000 fixes the current iteration's interlacing issues. Sony UK obviously told Eurogamer that it would not comment on the story, due to the classic tag team of "rumour" and "speculation."

However, having spoken to an insider source – who's not Dave Perry, but is a developer working on the new hardware – we can reveal that the new handheld will arrive before Christmas and will be far more similar to the iPhone than the current device.

Like Apple's newcomer, the PSP 2 will be a compact device with a large touchscreen. However, where Sony's machine has the edge is when the touchscreen is slid open as it reveals familiar buttons, D-pads and – praise the Lord of Handhelds – dual analogue controls.

This new format should allow for both existing hardcore console titles as well as simpler touchscreen games along the lines of those currently available in the App Store. And like the App Store, (and in the absence of UMD), the games will all be available for digital download via the PlayStation Store.

fan mock up that is apparently close to what sony is doing

this section doesnt get enough love so i made this a new thread. a 4k so soon? gotta say thats one rumor i didnt expect. but if it fixes the 3k's problem, then bring it on!
I wouldn't say that it's "so soon" if it's not going to arrive until late 2009, nearly a year after the 3000 came out.

My wish list for it would be:
  • Move the wireless up to at least G instead of the abysmally slow B of the current models.
  • Include some level of built-in storage, maybe different models with 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB of storage
  • Built in camera so those of us in the U.S. can make use of the bloody Camera option on the XMB without paying to import one (and all the other countries that never got the camera add-on).
  • Make the thing more comfortable to hold. My hands start to cramp up after a session with the thing.

The first two things would have to happen for me to even look at the 4000 version unless it was somehow different enough that new games wouldn't play on my 2000 (and I doubt that will happen unless it becomes the PSP 2 and not just another revision).

I think Sony needs to back off for a minute and rethink what they need to add to the system. They did a very nice upgrade with the 2000, but I did not get the 3000 because of the interlacing issues. I have been very angry that we can't at least get 802.11g in there...

I think I'm getting a PSP from the wife for x-mas not sure if its the 2000 or 3000 though - I won't be mad if they do a 4000 in late 09 (read: early 2010 after delays )

I think as long as the upgrades are more quality-of-life and refinement type things, I'm happy to see them upgrade it. Better screen and battery life are natural upgrades. I'll miss the upgrade on the wireless if they do it, but that wouldn't make me wait a whole 'nother year (though I may try and get the BB replacement plan if my wife hasn't...)

The one thing that's really important to me about this rumor is no PSP2 until at least late 2010/early 2011 at the very earliest. (Assuming the rumor is true). My only fear would be a PSP2 soon and now the official line and the rumors don't put a new PSP generation out there any time soon.

Personally I hope they launch the PSP2 around the same time as the PS4 at this point. One of the biggest selling points on the PSP for me is the interactivity, so I hope that play that up to the hilt for the eventual PSP2 and PS4 launches.

If they were listening to what we wanted, wouldn't the 2000 have included dual analog sticks?

But again, I won't even consider the 4000 without 802.11g and integrated storage (and hopefully a firmware update that brings the music playback up the standards of the PS3).

I hope they do that for the PSP 2, 2 different SKUs, a standalone option and a phone option.

as much as i'd like it, how will they manage it? a mini psp phone? cause a psp sized phone would never work. and what about carriers?

Can be any carrier, cut a deal with Sprint or Verizon or somebody.

The phone version would have to be slightly different to cater the needs of people that just want a phone that can play awesome games, the standalone model would be more for the serious gamer. Obviously a PSP sized phone would never work, and it would have to be smaller, maybe with sliders or something, IDK, but a 2 SKU would be the best option IMO.

well i mention carriers because they rarely have the same phones. and when they do, the carriers cater it to themselves. package them with useless software..etc. sounds like a mess lol
