Me too!

-Get your paws, off me you da**ed dirty ape!"

He and Newman were HUGE stars. Why the difference? They didn't keep Chuck on the screen too long. Compared to Newman. WTF

His personal and political views were different than most in Hollywood. And most Hollywood "elites" can't accept that anyone thinks different than them.

I agree. And that is their loss. Charlton Heston was one of the greatest actors to ever be in films.

Because the people there don't know that he also marched w/ MLK and think he was just a "gun guy".

He fought for Individual rights, regardless of whether the issue was popular or not.

Sean Penn can't hold his jock.

On the flip side... Milk beat out Mickey Rourke's amazing performance in The Wrestler. A terrible injustice in my book. And Why? I'll let you figure it out. But here's a clue - the entire audience roared when Penn addressed the issue of Proposition 8 and I didn't see a single dissenter (someone not clapping) in the joint. Even Frank Langaella (sp?), who never clapped for anything else...

The quickest way to kill your career in Hollywood is to be openly conservative. There are a few open conservatives in Hollywood but definitely not many. You do get blacklisted for it, though no one will ever admit.

The problem I have with it isn't the naked ideology bias. It's the intellectual dishonesty. If you work in Hollywood and voted against prop 8, then you're a homphobe and discriminatory even though it's okay to discriminate against conservatives or religious people. Just be honest about the bias. While you may not like them, there is no doubt what the Klan, NAACP, and GLAAD are about and who can become members.

It's also the reason why Mickey Rourke didn't win on Sunday. He was a shoo in until he said something that wasn't hostile about President Bush at the Golden Globes. At that point, the Academy erased Rourke's name off the Oscar and had Sean Penn's put on.

Personally, and beside the point, I don't know anyone who has seen Milk. I've got the requisite gay friends and have seen enough movies that Milk could get lumped in with in people's minds to hopefully not be considered some kind of "-phobe." It has nothing to do with the subject matter, but it looks boring in the oh to patented Gus Van Sant narcolepsy inducing way. He has put me to sleep in more movies than I can remember. The only one of his that actually kep me interested in start to finish was To Die For. As examples, My Own Private Idaho was interesting but took a very long time to build to a point that didn't seem to justify the runtime, and Paranoid Park might have been good except I didn't know what the central narrative was driving at and made me think they tried to feel sympathy for a responsibility dodger. Rourke was robbed.

Couldn't agree more. Penn was probably the LAST person on the list that actually deserved the award based on his performance. He got it simply to appease the elites because he was "sooooo brave to take on a role such as this". I guess he listened to RDJ and didn't go 'full-retard' this time...

I am really glad to see so many of you outspoken about this. I don't care how goofy some actor's views are, because I'm around them all the time and most of them are GOOFY! Now are they throwing these awards shows to honor performances in movies or judge them for their personal views? Heston was an awesome actor that took risks in film and ended up making some of the best movies of the 20th Century. So who are they to judge what Heston thought when many of their own views are so whacked, it pales in comparison to what Heston believed in. I don't agree with all of Heston's viewpoints, but I met the man several times and he was a very sincere and friendly person. At least he had the nads to stand for what he believed in regardless of if he was to be ridiculed or not.

So I am very glad to hear everyone shocked about this. I didn't watch the Oscar's, nor have I in the past 7 or so years. I love movies but I hate awards shows for just this reason. It's just a freakin popularity contest. And as mentioned in a previous post, Heston was just not well liked amongst his fellow actors.

Brando had it right!

The oscars have zero credibility anymore, if they ever did. The only things eligible to win are social liberal propaganda pieces that attack White people or religion or promote homosexuality. It's a snore-fest.

I love movies but have grown to despise many of the people who make them. That bunch of phony S.O.B.s couldn't set aside their ideological differences for one damn moment to pay tribute to a Hollywood icon. They are a pathetic and disgusting bunch of narcissistic bores.

I'd bet good money that he is regarded more highly by more Americans than anyone who sat in that audience.

Charlton Heston is among the greatest actors of film...Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, The War Lord, El Cid ....

Everyone is entitled to his or her political views, and Heston's were well within the bounds of American democratic beliefs. One may not agree with his politics but he deserves the respect and right to express them.

When I learned of Mr. Heston's illness a couple of years ago, I did something I had never done before or since. I wrote a letter to an actor. In my letter to him, I expressed my hopes and well wishes for him and his family, and my view that he stands among the greatest actors of all time. He wrote back a most kind and touching letter to me thanking me for my thoughts... a letter I will cherish.

Charlton Heston deserved much, much more at the Academy Awards. He was a good man, and a giant of Hollywood.

Haha considering why Heston is not so appreciated in Hollywood I'm so not surprised that you my trigger-happy friend, came to his rescue in this specific issue

Quite right!

But I will defend my right to bear my Planet of the Apes and Ben Hur DVDs until they pry them from my cold dead hands!

Funny thing is, he was one of my favorite actors before I even new his stance on the second Amendment or civil rights. After learning about them it only makes the man more impressive.
