Also, I thought Mangold was finally tackling The Force. Is that delayed again??

Coming from someone that hasn't seen any of the movies (I know, I know), even this doesn't sound right!

Agreed. Spielberg phoned it in with Crystal Skulls anyway. Anyone could have directed that.

I can't see Mangold keeping in crap like the escape by refrigerator, commie fighting monkeys or Shia getting hitting the crotch by bushes gags stay in. I mean, I remember Temple of Doom and Last Crusade having some silly moments, but I didn't retain a single earnest moment from that entire last movie. It might as well have been that Will Ferrell Land of the Lost movie I was watching in the theater.

Gigantic bummer is putting it lightly. Not because of Mangold btw.

Unless I missed something between last month and today, it was announced last month that Matt Damon was attached to star for Mangold. I know Damon is busy filming The Last Duel at the moment, but still.

If Mangold's still doing Star Wars then his connection to Indy makes even more sense.

So is George Lucas (arguably even more so).

This is just another nail in the coffin. This project should have been cancelled long ago...

If Mangold had had a problem with those scenes, he'd probably have been shown the door. IJ was Lucas' baby. Lucas created the story for KotCS and approved the final script, and that's that.

KotCS is as classically and handsomely staged as any Spielberg adventure film (certainly more so than latter-day stuff like Ready Player One), so not exactly sure how it was "phoned-in" in terms of direction, unless you mean it should've been innovative and different. I might respect the opinion of those who say it has more silly elements than the previous entries, but maybe redirect the ire to the writer rather than the director.

Spielberg tried and failed to channel that younger version of himself with Crystal Skull so yeah, if they're gonna make a new one then it's best he steps aside as his heart just isn't in it any more. Not that he doesn't still make fantastical adventures (RPO was frothy but fun) but he wants to play in other sandpits rather than keep returning to Indy. When people say "I'd rather have the creator even if they're not on top form" I'm reminded of Clint Eastwood voicing himself in the extended cut of TGTBATU. To me it sounds awful, not just because his voice has changed so much over the years but because he's trying to actively impersonate his younger self, so it still ends up sounding like some fourth-rate impressionist they found in a bar anyway.

I know Bad Boys isn't exactly Indiana Jones but the critical and commercial reaction to the Bay-less third has exceeded any realistic expectations people had for that flick, so if you get the right people behind the camera then the magic can still happen. Yes, even for Indy, and I think Mangold is an unusual but welcome choice as he'll be able to step outside of that "chasing Spielberg" mentality. Respect will be paid of course, but it'll be his own film. And, as said, at least it's not JJ.

Good points.

I'll still go see the film, and I'll see it with an open heart and open mind. I can't say no to a Harrison-led Indy flick. But the "what might've been" will always be in the back of my mind. Kind of like how I can't watch Ant-Man and not dream of what an Edgar Wright-led Ant-Man might've been.

The new Bad Boys also isn't half as memorable as the first two. Better than BBII, sure, but that's not a high bar to clear. And Spielberg is the type of director whose lackadaisical efforts are still better than most can muster at their best. I dunno, there was a consistency to Ford/Spielberg/Lucas/Williams that I'm not too keen to disrupt. But I also like Crystal Skull so whatever, I'm part of a small crowd here.

I don't even know why they have to make another one. Just let the franchise end, which is probably what they should have done after the third movie anyway

This. The movies have always been a love letter to pulpy magazines and matinee serials of the 40s.

Dude, I actually like Crystal Skull but it still feels like someone playing at being Spielberg rather than actually being from Spielberg, there's an energy to those first three - even Last Crusade, where Spielberg was already tired of the formula - that Skull just doesn't match.
