Wasn't the TiVo dealer (AVS insider) recently saying another major studio would defect and two minors go neutral, at CEDIA? Or, it simply can be some attempt to prop up the technical reasoning for Paramount. Too bad the CTO didn't mention the BD50 to start with. It would have given them a lot more defense against anti-trust. Of course, what is never said is that when they aren't attacking BD50 directly, they are claiming HD DVD-30 is more than sufficient. So, if that is true, why wouldn't Paramount simply adopt a BD25 only policy? If they can deliver high quality on that, that would shut up the HD DVD-30 isn't enough critics, wouldn't it? Gary |

Notice how he (Vaughn) conveiniently claims to have "run into a stone wall" when it comes to yields on combo HD DVD's. LOL.
I never cared for the guy when he posted here. What a tool. By the way what ever happened to Chad? Last edited by Longshot; 09-04-2007 at 04:24 PM. |

Yes that has ALWAYS been the way they work. Take their weakness and hide it by making up something about the competition having that problem. It deflects attention and sets the agenda..the BDA needs to stop letting them set the agenda. A nice official list of all the misinformation that has been spewed to date - with a checkbox beside each point for which have turned out to be true and how many have been false.

Actually Automatic tries to figure out if your display supports it or not. If it doesn't, it should switch to off. Unfortunately some displays may mistakenly report that they support 24p, while in reality it doesn't. That's mostly the display manufacturer's fault, not Sony. That's also what the "off" option is for, and when changing resolutions to 1080p you do have an option to confirm if it worked or not - if it doesn't it'll switch back to your regular resolution. You can also hold down the on button while turning on the console to get the PS3 to boot up in low-resolution mode. Mind you I agree that defaulting it to "off" would have saved people some trouble if they first set up 1080p, and then upgrade the firmware afterwards.

8 minutes of incorrect framing would actually be a very big deal. Certainly enough to warrant a replacement. With that said, my disc is still in the mail so I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. It's also very hard for me to evaluate how long things last, or even to what degree the framing is incorrect or not. From what I gather people at Disney have been informed of the problem and are looking into it, so we'll just have to wait and see what kind of response (if any) they come up with. If this had happened to my favorite movies, I'd be livid.
Heck, it DID happen to one of my favorite ones ever, but it was a music replacement rather than a video issue. It lasted something like 30 seconds, but it was enough to really make me feel betrayed and pissed off. The scene was only a small part of the whole, but to me it was so incredibly pivotal that it completely ruined the rest of it for me. So to those saying "no big deal," you might want to be a bit more considerate in that not everyone feels the same way, and just because it's not a big deal to you personally doesn't mean that others aren't affected. Think of it this way - some people care more about audio than video, and the other way around, but just because you don't, doesn't mean that it's not important to them when there is a problem of some sort. Hello Blu-Ray.com! This is my very first post over here so please let me state a few things I have on my mind. After more than three years with 1620 posts I am ready and relieved to finally put the AVSforum behind me (although I will still attend a few sub-forum areas like my beloved Digital High-end projectors, the Subwoofer/Speaker/Amp and above all the Ultra High-end HT gear forums). First of all let me say how nice it is to see a few familiar and much valued names around here. My Best Regards to Rob Tomlin, Supermans, benes, Maxpower1987, Dave Mack, patrick99, darinp2, Penton-Man and of course paidgeek. (among many others I sure should have mentioned here...) Looks more and more like a AVS refugee camp to me. Regarding the quote from Rob I would also like to express my utmost gratitude and respect for all the support and great work paidgeek and Sony Pictures have delighted us with. Paidgeek, thank you very much for listening to some of my suggestions (especially the forced 24p mode for the PS3, 20bit/24bit DTHD tracks with Dialog Normalization "turned off") and acting in our best interest. One thing though - I sure didn't come here to hold hands with fellow Blu-Ray/AV enthusiasts and sing Kumbaya all day long in the light of Blu-Ray's greatness. Being supportive and intrigued by Blu-Ray's capabilities and potential shouldn't make us closed-minded - NO - not everything is good or even acceptable with Blu-Ray as a format (yet). YES - there are some things HD-DVD is (still) better at and we all can and should learn our lessons here! Let us strive to make Blu-Ray live up to it's potential and let's make it the format WE want it to be. What better opportunity can there be than having such supportive insider's as paidgeek listening to us. Let us make sure that just for once the technologically more advanced and much more ambitious format ends up on top against the bean counter's dream of a super (cost-)efficient, "good enough" approach that is HD-DVD! For the sake of our passion. Last edited by TheLion; 09-04-2007 at 09:00 PM. |

The original DVD of Excalibur is misframed too in a number of places and it bugs the living crap out of me. And yes, it's VERY obvious (Merlin's head is cut off in a few places while he's talking). If the PotC BDs are similar, I would be pretty annoyed as well.
People, this isn't a BD vs HD DVD issue. It's a telecine problem. It has zero to do with whether one format is better than another. But if the film is screwed up then it should be fixed, or at least acknowledged as a mistake. |

How sad is it when the straw grasping latches onto silly things like that?
Then again, the original Fifth Element and the aborted Robocop release had continued as "proof" of something or other for over a year. Yet, there is Universal putting out 2 and 2.5 PQ releases and that crowd doesn't seem to care. If Sony did that people would be freaking out. Gary |

Gotta say, I have not seen any posts HERE that imply the misframing is a Blu-ray issue, but I am kind of dismayed to see the same reflexive dismissal of it as an issue just because the HD DVD crowd has leapt on it to beat BD supporters over the head with. How is it any different than not being pleased with a not so great transfer?
I had not seen the info about someone from the studio saying it was intentional and that the DVD and HD broadcast versions were both wrong. Is there somewhere to read that here or elsewhere? BB |
