After some hiccups this morning trying to log in, it eventually did work for me. Apps are all updated on my devices and it's all good to go. It's nice to see a bump in 4K content. Currently I'm accessing Max through my phone service.

so again i don't have dolby vision on my 4k tv but i don't get it how come on roku 4k tv that doesn't have dv a tlc i watch that new shazam movie i see hdr comes up however when i watch on my apple tv streaming<-the 1st one not the latest version i don't see hdr come up

however i know it works because was working hbo max app when i try to watch wonder woman 84 the other day

do you all see hdr come up as soon as you watch something on max app on tv screen apple tv app ?

somebody said on twitter I can not play HDR content on max app on Apple TV it play in dolby atmos but video is not hdr but when I play it on roku it play in hdr.<-this is what i'm talking about why it can show up on roku but not apple tv i guess this is a bug and will be fixed by end of the week?

now apple tv max app they bought back the none native app back like from beginning hbo max until they fixed it<-could this be reason why i don't see hdr come up on video because of this?

jumpman and I explained how HDR/DV works on the AppleTV device.

Here is what I posted early this morning:

Turning on Match Content will switch any stream outside of Max and Peacock to the appropriate display settings. IE: 1080p or lower will be HD/SD without HDR/DV enabled, 1080p/4K HDR will display as HDR10, and (if supported) 1080p/4K HDR10+ will output at the proper HDR10+.

Now, while watching content on Max and Peacock, you will have a Dolby Vision layer for everything. Movies and shows with Dolby Vision tag will appear with the proper color while the non DV streams may look a bit darker. Don’t want that? Then as jumpman says, you got to change your Video settings everytime.

OK. Instead of turning on Dolby Vision, set your AppleTV to output 4K HDR and leave Matching on for both. Now you’ll have HDR always on for Max and Peacock.

These two apps can not swap between SDR and HDR on AppleTV so it is either SDR everything in Max & Peacock or HDR everything in Max & Peacock. Anyway you choose, you still will not see the word HDR come up when you watch any content.

that's what i'm saying then how come when i watch hbo max this past week when i fire up wonder woman 84 it came up hdr on tv then disappear like normal the word and yet when fire up in max the word hdr doesn't automatically come up on tv

i doubt uninstall and install will help so to clarify when you guys fire up any movie or show that in description indicates in 4k the following dv dolby atmos hdr the word hdr doesn't show up on tv in new max app unlike it did hbo max is that what your saying?

my question do you think its due to them having it on native app that's why i don't see it they may fixed this week or do you think will never be fixed its a new thing so to speak have to handle it

i even see hdr come up as soon as i switch strumbox receiver to apple tv<-still don't know not doing it when i watch on max all of a sudden on 4k

I thought that too with Peacock earlier but evidently it is only partly right:

It does “fake” 4K DV upconversion for the non native 4K DV/HDR content. The native 4K DV/HDR is unaffected and displays properly. I don’t understand why Max and Peacock can not support Range Matching. Hulu does and the Apple app uses Hulu’s own player as does Disney+.

Hopefully the technicians update Max to support Range Matching like the old HBO Max app. I don’t expect the technicians at Peacock to do anything, users have been asking for the ability to turn off Autoplay since launch. There is still no way to turn off Autoplay but now you got an extra ten seconds.

I’ll explain it slower:

The Max app does not support switching between SDR and HDR unlike the HBO Max app.

That means with your AppleTV set to 4K HDR that everything you watch in the Max app will be upconverted to 4K with HDR.

You will not see the word HDR come up because HDR is already on. Why? The Max app can not switch between SDR and HDR.

A lot of content will look darker because it is being displayed in HDR. Why? The Max app can not switch between SDR and HDR.

Wonder Woman 1984 played via HBO Max on an AppleTV set to 4K SDR with Range Matching On will show the word HDR when the movie loads. Why? The HBO Max can switch between SDR and HDR.

Wonder Woman 1984 played via Max on an AppleTV set to 4K Dolby Vision or 4K HDR with Range Matching On will not show the word HDR when the movie loads. Why? The Max app can not switch between SDR and HDR.

Range Matching allows the app to switch the display between SDR and HDR/DV. The app has to support this: the Max app does not.

This 4K situation is an absolute mess. I went ahead and forced Dolby Vision on my AppleTV settings (match range/frame rate was already on) but now it just looks like fake HDR.

The difference is more obvious when comparing the streams to the physical UHDs for titles I own like Wizard of Oz, Hook, Singing In The Rain, etc.

I AM getting Atmos at least. What a headache.

They look like upscales because Max is not done updating the streaming masters. A lot of titles have the 4K Dolby Vision Dolby Atmos notice on the page but are still the HD SDR versions like Halloween Kills. Others have the Dolby Vision badge but are applying DV to the HD stream like Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz.

Titles that have the 4K Dolby Vision or 4K UHD badges (next to the runtime) have been fully updated. Note that the 4K UHD badged titles are SDR so again, a DV/HDR layer added by the AppleTV.

Warner Discovery needs to be bombarded with requests for Range Matching to fix this.

I also tried the XBox app and it only supports HDR10. But once a stream triggers HDR10 then it stays stuck in HDR forcing that over the image.

Face firmly in the palm of my hand right now. They’ve made this so much harder than it needed to be. Dolby Vision implementation on the old app was more than solid. Why mess with it?

These aren’t 4K Firesticks, Warner. We don’t need your subpar in-app player to do the heavy lifting.

It does not. That's the issue that we have been talking about. steve_dave posted a work around the issue, which is only a temporary fix. When this "fix" has been used you WILL NOT see the HDR or DV letters or logos onscreen.
