Got this player about 8 months ago for $50, and it's starting to crap out on me. Nearly every movie will completely freeze around 70-80% through. Not fixable, can't even fast forward past it

Is it only triple-layer discs? That would identify the problem, not that it helps much I guess.

Same problem with my UP870. I've put in a warranty claim and am waiting for the shipping label. I fear that LG won't test the player long enough to see that it's even broken, though. Everything from The Sopranos to Alien UHD. It only happens like once during playback, but that's enough for me to be bothered.

Like a lot of people, I think, I got the 870 on clearance from Walmart for $50. It was my first 4K player, but I had problems with it from the beginning. At least once per movie, sometimes twice, the picture would completely cut out. I would output the sound via optical, and it would keep playing, even while it took a few seconds for the picture to come back. If I tried to run the audio through the HDMI, both audio and video would cut out for seconds at a time. At first I thought I had a bad HDMI cable, so I bought a replacement. Didn't help at all. Finally, a month ago, I put a disc in and the picture was cutting out from the very beginning and constantly.
Last week, I gave up and bought the new Sony X800M2. I can finally put all outside factors to rest. It was most definitely the player. The Sony plays everything like a champ. I swear, it even looks significantly better, though I have yet to re-watch any titles previously viewed with the LG, so I can't say so with certainty. I had such a bad experience with the LG that I'm just junking it and marking it down as $50 lost. I'm always telling people not to cheap out on electronics. I need to take my own advice more often. |

Unfortunate to see quite a bit of people reporting issues with the player not too long after it was purchased. I bought mine for $25 and it has been absolutely flawless for the past 1.5 years. Guess there were some good and bad batches manufactured.

Blast from the past. My LG UP870 player still going, but echo some of the same issues. Freezing, and some black outs. Thinking about going for the Sony 8700 that is now on sale.
My main gripe is that the default picture is muted a bit. You can change it going into the settings and bumping up the contrast, but the settings cannot be save. You got to do this everytime. Decisions.... |

Is it safe to say buying a used LG UP875 is a bad idea? The last few messages on this thread have soured me on bidding on a $60 player that's listed on eBay and holding off for a Sony or just getting that Panasonic 820 the next time it drops to $400.

You need to test it before you buy it if it shares the same parts with the up970. It had a horrible scream come out of it when it loaded the fifth element. They fixed them later on in the year. I have 2 up970 I bout on close out for 100. It didn’t do it to every disc just certain ones.

I have discovered an interesting "feature" of LG 870 player.
It turns out that LG players are capable of outputting 24p from DVDs, but somehow this is possible only after a 4K BD was played. That puts the player strangely in the "24p" mode. Otherwise, it's 60p all the way for DVDs, and even, surprisingly, for BDs (all my other players output BDs as 24p). Moreover, even unprotected PAL DVD are being played in the 24p mode with this trick! With some stutter, of course ![]() I have a region 1 UBK870, but I assume the image processing should be the same for 80 and 90 models, so quite possibly that "feature" is present on them as well. |
