Yes, there is audio switching no matter what connection you use and yes, as far as I can tell it plays all the surround sound formats as long as you enable bitstream in the PS3. There is a two page matrix in the manual identifying the right surround sound format based on the source and speaker # so if you need specifics, grab a copy of the manual.
