What models? If the Samsung 1400 is the Samsung player, then I would go with that. Otherwise, I'd recommend the Sony.

Edit: To a mod... can this be moved to the Blu-ray players section?

If you must pick between Sony and Samsung that are currently available then the BD-P1400 would be the most sensible purchase. Now, if you can wait a little bit then Sony's BDP-S500 may be a superior player, but at a significantly higher price.

No way that the 500 is a better player just becuase of the DTS HD MA factor. It cannot send it in any form. But that is just my opinion.

I said it may be a better player. I did not say that it is in fact a better player. No one knows that, yet obviously.

Cool

I have the Sammy 1200 but I'd go with Sony. Whoever posted about quirks with their players is right. They don't run 100% smoothly, and with the last firmware incident, Samsung was last in line to offer their update.

I had the BDP-S300 and it was a good player but the upconvert of SD DVD wasn't that great and the load times were kind of long.
I exchanged it for the Samsung BD-P1200 and couldn't be happier.
Better upconvert of SD DVD, faster load times on BJ enhanced discs like POTC & FF4 and has been error free from playback issues.

The only issue was the latest FF4 and DAT playback issue but that was resolved within a week after those discs were released with a firmware update.

Some people, the minority have issues with the Samsung players and they are the ones that are most vocal on these forums regarding the quality and reliability of the player but the majority of the people don't encounter issues and those are the people you don't see posting or even hear from because they are enjoying their player.

Out of thousands of players sold, you will see a select few on these messageboards that have horror stories or issues with their players but they are like 1% or less of the owners.

A lot of PS3 owners will tell you to get a PS3 and it's not a bad choice but remember that your audio output options are limited and you do need to deal with the fan noise(some louder than others), generates/dissapates more heat than other stand alone Blu-ray players, no disc tray(has disc grabbing mechanism like car CD players) and also dealing with(appearence) a game deck in your AV rack for a Blu-ray player.

I have the Samsung BDP-1000 and BDP-1200.

I've had nothing but good luck with them. Other then the issue everyone else had wiht the BJ disc, the firmware update fixed it all. Obviously the 1000 is slower but it works great. I'm not running mine through my Reciver yet, But I haven't experienced any issues with the player auto switching the resolutions.....

I have a PS3 aswell, It does create way more heat, but it's also VERY quick.... I don't think the fan noise is an issue personally....

This is exactly what I did. I got the BDP-S301 from Costco for $349.00. Looked fantastic. Very slow to load. Froze twice on my the first day. Took it back and got a Samsung BDP1200 at Sears for $299. Love it. Fast, great upconverting and not a single problem. Zero.

But if you are looking at the BDP1400, that is a good player for the new codecs. Its upconverting chip is not a good as the 1200, so you have to factor that in. So if the upconverting ability is more important, go 1200. If the new codecs are more important, go with the 1400. Personally, I would take either the 1200 or 1400 over the Sony BDPS300/301. FYI, I have a Sammy HLS5687W 1080p display.

I have a ps3 and Bdps1 and decieded to buy the samy bdp1400 because of it bitstream DTS-MA and DOLBY HD to my avr-3808ci which it does nice but kinda not really happy with the samy ps3 has far more superior PQ even with SD DVD the S1 PQ is just a tad better than the samy and I kinda anoyed with the sound through hdmi it takes about 2 sec to switch which i have no problem with the S1 or Ps3, since I just bought the Samy this weekend Im returning it and switch to panny hopefully its better.

Default sony or samsung ?

you really cant go wrong with either, they both make incredible products, ive always been a big big big sony fan, but lately have picking up some samsung products, the only real wrong move you can make is buying anything made by toshiba
