We don't know what the OP's conversation entailed, but there are people who are simply future-proofing their movie player purchase. They might be buying the player they can afford now, with plans to purchase an HD-TV when they can. So they're not all idiots.

like me, for example (but not really for price - I paid twice the price of PS3). It was to secure ability to play BD and Final Fantasy XIII

I'm sure he meant it in a nice way.

I asked this question a while back. But I KNOW I never called them idiots for doing so. A small select number of users do it. They still get the benefit obviously on SD TV. It's a wise Entertainment investment now and for later. These guys are owed an apology by anyone who thought less of them.

The way I see it is if someone is buying Blu-ray it is because they appreciate the quality and performance of the format. No matter what you view it on.

So thank you for your support!

I picked up several BDs on sales, and thru gifts, before I got my PS3 as a BD player. Yep, I already had an HDTV and was enjoying OTA & Dish HD. I knew I'd be getting a BD player, just not which one or when.

I started buying blu-rays before I got my HDTV, though I had a PS3 to watch them in standard def. I knew I was gonna get a high def TV and I wanted to have content for it when I got it.

My neighbor, lets just call him Sam is in 4th grade and got a PS3 for his birthday. He has it hooked up to a nice new big screen HDTV via the in the box composite cable. (His dad bought the TV for Football season but according to him he doesn't think it's getting signals in HD even though he pays extra on his cable bill for it.)

I have an extra set of component output cables from my PS3 because I eventually went HDMI but I can't convince him to take them home and use them.

He buys Blu Rays and I think it's mostly just fun for him because he has to use the shiny new PS3 to play them.

So, yeah, in his case some thinking could help his setup. But,.. He's happy with it so I guess he's doing alright afterall.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I bought dvds before I had a dvd player. This was when dvds first came out and the player I wanted was $1200. I did have an HD set before I went Blu ray, but I would have purchased them even if I hadn't yet, no need to buy the same movie twice.

I'm sure they're saving and realize what HDTVs are and what they do.

Angry Hey!

I don't usually get pissy, but

LISTEN UP, JERK!!

Useful idiot my a$$. I have a PS3 and I buy Blu-ray for many reasons - and here's one you might not have thought of:

The movies even look better on Non-HD TV's too !!!

One of my first purchases was The Last Waltz - a concert film that's about 20 years old. I was doing an internship out of town in an apartment furnished with a 13" tube TV. I played both my existing DVD copy AND the Blu-Ray copy ON A 13" TUBE TV!!! and you could STILL tell a difference!!!

Thank you for assuming, you know what they say about folks that do that.

Oh wait, I guess I'm assuming you know what they say...

Anyways, the Blu-Rays I buy of DVD's I already own look better on my 27" color RCA Tube. Within a year, I'm looking to have a 46-52 XBR4. Well mein froind - the improvements I already see will do me just fine until I can afford the luxury of Hi-Def.

Thanks and goodnight...

I don't have HDTV. but I am capable of 720p via my PC monitor.
I am considering Bravia 26 inch (don't like big-sized television)

Better transfers are better transfers, better sound quality is better sound quality.

Blu-Ray changes that...

I'll take "Directions" for $1,000, Alex...

"This is the buttock that you should kiss first... unless you work for Fox News..."

"Uh, What is the 'Left', Alex"

"Correct, select again..."

I won't mock your decision. Some Blu-Rays are cheaper than DVD or cost the same. Why not go with Blu?
