Message board members Pipe Dream and macfalk have unearthed more breaking news regarding MGM’s financial woes. A Business Week/Bloomberg update announced that billionaire Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries may drop out of the bidding, having received no response to-date from MGM or its creditors regarding its restructuring proposal. Another interesting development was published today at Variety: with MGM’s latest extension on its debt servicing payment scheduled to run out today, MGM’s creditors granted yet another extension; this one for 45 days (expiring May 14).

From both articles: lenders have deemed the current offers too low, a person with knowledge of the deliberations said last week. MGM debtholders are said to be split into two camps — one that wants to accept the best offer; and the other that wants to prolong the process in hopes of keeping the studio alive. The remaining binding offers for MGM are believed to be in the $1.5 billion range, far below the $2 billion threshold price sought by MGM and its debtholders. MGM put itself up for sale in November, drawing a trio of binding offers two weeks ago. Lionsgate bailed out of the bidding last week, leaving only Time Warner and Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries in the running.

As we reported in this TheOneRing.net exclusive, inside sources tell us that moving forward with production of The Hobbit hinges on developments with MGM. So stay tuned here as we continue following the MGM saga closely.

That's got to be hard on the cholesterol

Wish I could join you guys on the reading but I am right into The First Men In Rome series and these are quite an adventure just by themselves. My Tolkien annual reading is usualy at the start of September

Hopefully the group will still be together by then. If the interest is there, I would imaging the Hobbit will be next.

Yep. It's the reason they had to expand the roles of Arwen & Eowyn for the movies, cause in the books, they do very little.

Since PJ has more creative control over this project than he did with LotR, it's also very unlikely that the studio will be able to pressure him to add or expand female roles like they did when he was filming LotR.

I didn't even know there were Elvish wizards in Middle Earth! Well none that were on the White Council anyway.

The White Council consists of more than just the Five Wizards. It also includes some elves.

The wizards were not Elves, but Maiar (angelic beings) and did not appear on the Middle-earth scene until about 1000 years into the Third Age. They were originally from Valinor; Gandalf, whose real name is Olorin, originally resided at the gardens of Irmo in Valinor. The White Council that occurred during the time period of 'The Hobbit' probably consisted of Saruman (head of the council), Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, Cirdan of the Grey Havens, and most likely Celeborn, Radagast, and some of Elrond's councillors (e.g. Glorfindel, Erestor).

His inclusion would even be more logical from the standpoint that his residence is right in the middle of the action at Rhosgobel, located between where Gandalf leaves the Dwarves at the entrance to Mirkwood, Lothlorien, and the Necromancer's (Sauron's) abode.

I would think so, because it is by mentioning Radagast that Beorn adopts an initial favorable attitude about Gandalf.

Hopefully that won't happen to this thread. The Hobbit is lighter subject matter than LoTR, so maybe that will help people adopt a more casual attitude.
