Actually...no. He'd be totally in the right for choosing to be with someone who is a much better match. If there is no ring, it's just a fling! He'd have to deal with the wrath of a she-elf scorned, but if he survived, he'd be a much happier man for it. Eowyn was hotter anyways imo.

That will be a negative aspect of The Hobbit compared to LoTR: no female main characters.

Never bothered me when I read the novel but then I was like 12 when I read the Hobbit.

Yep. It's the reason they had to expand the roles of Arwen & Eowyn for the movies, cause in the books, they do very little.

That being said, Tolkien was from a different time and well I can excuse him that fact of female characters in important roles.

It's an adventure novel about 12 dwarves and a Hobbit, not that surprising that there aren't a lot of girls in it. I do think that will turn away a few people who would've seen it but not many.

I don't know what they will do with the Hobbit, it's not like there are ways to expand a female role, since there is none to speak off

Unless they bring back Arwen? Let's not forget that we think of this a The Hobbit but they might be thinking more a prelude to LOTR

They might add a female to the White Council, maybe make Radagast into a woman. That wouldn't really bother anyone except Tolkien purists.

I assume that since they have beards and still attract dwarf men, either they have dynamite bodies or are great cooks.
