I liked the first 2 a lot but didn't care for the third. I traded it for Mystic River

Borrowed “Harvey” from the library.

I never used to like this film, but over time I came to realize the strengths of the story, characters, and themes. It’s not a lavish film by any means; it’s got a pretty low production value, and its stage-play origins are somewhat obvious. It’s not really a hilarious laugh-out-loud comedy. But it’s still fairly well-made with decent enough photography, superb acting, and enough amusing scenes to keep it entertaining.

At its core though, this is a film focusing on characters, their problems, and the comic circumstances and ironies that entail. It’s always been interesting to see how Elwood is such a laid-back pleasant character while everybody else is freaking out; it’s especially ironic since he’s supposedly the insane one and everybody else is sane. This time around though, I also picked up a bit on the theme of alcoholism (which is never fully shown, but occurs a lot in the dialogue) and it leads me to wonder
[Show spoiler]if Harvey is some kind of hallucination brought on by Elwood’s constant drinking; a manifestation of his own carefree glee, like a pink elephant or something. As such, I often wondered if the film’s ending is really a good thing, because it’s determined that he’s better off as a hallucinating drunkard. But I guess that’s not the point.

As you can see, I’m starting to dig the story.

4/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4/5, thinking factor: 3/5)

I will own this!

Also noticed these similarities to "Donnie Darko..."

* Both involve giant bunny rabbits.
* Both involve quantum time travel (seriously, Elwood explains how Harvey apparently has the ability to stop time).

...that's all I got. They're both totally different. I just thought these two things were funny.

The Mummy is my favorite, Mummy Returns is right behind the first one but the third was terrible imo.

Prestige

Film: 4.5/5
-Bale is an incredible actor. Far superior than most of the supposed "great" actors today
-I'm now convinced this film has endless replay value -- a friend hadn't seen it so I popped it in -- I was glued to the screen from start to finish despite it being about my 10th viewing
-Whatever happened to the Prestige thread? I watch this film like "Doubt", with different interpretations being possible on each viewing. Last time, I definitely saw the Gremal theory (
[Show spoiler]machine is fake
). This time, I saw the standard theory (
[Show spoiler]machine is real
)

PQ: 4.5/5

AQ: 4/5

Bale is def a very solid actor but I absolutely would not say he's far superior than most of the supposed greats today, such as Penn, Hanks, Crowe, etc. He's not in the same league as them at this point of his career. That being said, while he's had an array of roles he hasn't had enough films that truly showcase the talent I believe he has. Will be interested to see if he challenges himself even more going forward.

As for the Gremal theory, please never mention that again

Daredevil: Director's Cut

Daredevil is almost a very good film, except for all the little things that wouldn't be so bad if they weren't sprinkled throughout the film. The story is pretty strong with patches of good dialog and patches of very mediocre dialog that we have heard all too many times. Lines like "stay with me" ring of lazy writing in my opinion. One scene that stood out to me was when Electra and Matt are on the rooftop and instead of having interesting dialog, we get them staring into each other's eyes with acoustic guitar in the background. Very reminiscent of Transformers when Sam and Mikaela are spouting useless dialog with background music to distract us from the poor writing.

Couple character notes:
Bullseye. I did not like the character in the film when I saw it almost a decade ago. The silliness of his showmanship and bits like the airplane sequence as well as asking for a costume were a little too much for me. Having read many comics involving the character since then, I realized that those ring very true to the character and and pretty funny. He has a few too many weird hand gestures and spins that are not only silly, but they end up hurting him; which make the character look sillier than he should. Also, why was he Irish? Colin Farrel can do an American accent.
Kingpin. Michael Clarke Duncan is a very good actor and played the part very well. He captured the ruthless aspects of the character as well as the background. My gripe is the obvious: Kingpin is white. Comic books are a hybrid of visual story telling and literature; it is a 50/50 medium. I prefer films try to stick to what was illustrated whether it be skin color, costume, surrounding, etc.

Directing/Choreography. The directing of the fighting and action sequences were very obviously trying to hide a lack of real choreography. Starting with you Murdock fighting bullies with a cane. If the camera were backed up and no cutting was used, the fight would look insanely ridiculous. Young Murdock swats the cane against the bully's face about a dozen times; why doesn't the kid defend himself? Step back, put your arms up, something! This holds true for a lot of the movie. Too much CGI is another problem. The shot of Daredevil kicking Bullseye off the bike is really very cool save for the fact that the characters look like video game models from the 90s.

As for the new cut, I think many of the additional scenes really helped round out the film. They story involving Dante Jackson made room for a lot of good dialog especially for Foggy Nelson. The story also added a connection to Kingpin that really helped tie things together. I do think too much was added, for instance, the scene with Bullseye going through security. It added nothing to the film and had no real humor.

All in all, I can only give the film 3/5 at best. If they smoothed out a few of the edges and if it was directed better, it could have easily been a 4/5.
I am just glad the superhero movies have evolved a lot since this film.

The Fall (blu)

PQ: 4.5 (out of 5)

Tough not to give it a 5, but the last film I gave a perfect PQ rating to was Atonement, which was more consistently top-notch than this film.

AQ: 4 stars (out of 5)

A bit disappointing, to be honest.

Film: 3 stars (out of 4)

There's no doubt this is a film that demands to be seen for its originality and incredible set design, directing, costume design, and cinematography. I enjoyed the story within a story approach. That being said, something was missing to me. I wasn't too emotionally vested in the story and I think it could've been far more poignant than it ended up being. I think there was too much emphasis placed on the storytelling approach and visuals and not enough thought put into the themes that were meant to be conveyed. I highly recommend seeing the film for its originality though and I'd consider picking it up.

I just watched it again recently and have to agree with you that there was a little bit missing. Certain aspects should have been laid out a little better or explored more. I do think it was an absolutely beautiful movie and all the scenes with the little girl were very endearing. I did get the emotional connection that you seemed to not have. The scene toward the end
[Show spoiler]when Roy is killing the characters in the story and Alexandria is crying gets me every time
. I agree that the movie is quite unique. I think the director, Tarsem, almost cares more about the visuals than the story and characters .

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Times - I was pleasantly surprised by this film as I didnt expect to like it for a few different reasons. It did start out a bit slow and some of the things didnt capture me right away but once the film got going and especially the 2nd half I was all in. Thats a credit to the film that it got better as time went on and the ending was really good and the story was actually pretty good as well. Gyllenhaal did better than I expected and he was believable. Gemma was sexy as ever and I have to say at first I thought the wise cracks were corny but as the movie went on I was very amused by Sheik Amar. All in all I have to say I did enjoy it.

Film Rating - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5)

PQ - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

AQ - 5 stars (out of 5)

Got Em!!
