"BUTTLICKER! OUR PRICES HAVE NEVER BEEN LOWER!" - Dwight on The Office.

But seriously, I'm having trouble keeping money in my wallet because the prices are so cheap now. Amazon almost always has catalog releases under $20 and new releases around $25, and they almost always fall about two weeks after release. I love it!

I just want to add, I am boycotting any movies with DVD's included. How is a new format supposed to take off, if they force you to take an inferior copy that you may never use. Just more wasted space, on my Blu Ray shelves.

How the heck do they waste space?! They're inside the same sized BD case!

I agree with you in a sense as for me the DVD is pointless. I'd prefer to experience the film the way it was meant to be. But I understand not everyone cares about perfectly and wants to watch a film while they fly on a trip and don't want to pay for a second time just for a digital copy, or to entertain the kids in the back of a minivan. No reason for a BD there, the DVD works perfectly fine for the small screen.

So you haven't any problem with Digital Copy?

Yes, I can do without the digital copy too. Just more wasted space in my music shelving units. I like to keep my movies and CD's in pristine shape. I still have my first CD, from the mid 80's, in perfect condition without a finger mark on the disk. Anal, huh? Redux.....my boss is anal, huh?

What a confusing post. What are you trying to say exactly? And how does a digital copy in a blu-ray case no bigger than a regular single bd case cause you shelf issues anyway?

Perhaps like him I consider Digital Copy to be a completely worthless "format" and the best application for it is the trash or a disc shredder?

If they were charging more for the movies I could see that but they are not. And there are many people that have just bought their first player and have dvd players in every room of the house as well in the car. So that makes it a better value for most and helps in adoption not hurts.

Even though we have our standalone BD player in the living room & a PS3 in the bedroom, we still have a standard DVD player in the bedroom as well. I refuse to use a game console as a movie player (I never used one as a CD player either), so for all intents & purposes, our bedroom movie machine is a DVD player. At night, I like to put a DVD in, hit repeat & fall asleep (for some reason I can't fall or stay asleep in silence). So until I get a player with title repeat for the bedroom, I still play DVDs. Heck, I still buy DVDs when I see a great price, when something's not available on BD or when I know it's something I'll want to put on at night. Truth be told, I probably watch more DVDs than BDs to this day.

Your kidding right? If anything it helps out more. Again not every room has a blu-ray player, cars cetainy don't and it allows potential blu-ray owners to buy a blu-ray copy now and still be able to watch the movie on dvd. As for taking up more space, what are you talking about? Incluing a dvd is no different than including a digital copy disc in terms of overall packaging size.

In reards to the op, I find new release prices are about the same if not lower but that prices drop fairly quickly now on blu-rays and to start a nice collection isn't that expensive at all anymore.

I feel like it used to be (esp. with DVD) that release week was the lowest a title would be for months. Then after a few months it would drop, especially towards the holidays.

Nowadays it seems release week can be the WORST time to buy! Pre-orders can dip pretty low weeks before release, and prices can drop considerably in less than a month after release, but actual release week seems to stink, especially at B&Ms.

I find myself waiting longer & longer to pick up new releases. And I get more used BDs now, which can be much cheaper within a few weeks of release (after all those blind buys ).

Basically, there are still great prices out there - it's just not as simple as it used to be to find them. Just be patient, and keep an eye on the Hot Deals thread!

I think the stores have figured out that many people need to have a movie on release week, and a few extra dollars won't dissuade them. It's almost like the opening weekend for a movie. After that, sales start to decline, and a good price on week 3 or week 4 entices people on the fence to buy. Some people might even be thinking the best price is on the week of release, even if that isn't the case anymore.

Last year we did not need to shop around for good deals. The price for every block buster on release day in all the main stores and online was under $20 (Star Trek, District 9, Up, etc.) (October - December). I bought almost every new release during that time. This year is different and the release prices are higher. Sure you can find good deals if you jump through hoops or wait a couple weeks. In general, prices are higher!!!

DJ, I see that you joined in Dec 2009. Is that when you started collecting? I am thinking you missed the golden year for pricing that was the 4th quarter of 2009.

Yup, the name of the game in Blu buying is patience, lots of it. Sometimes I do wait, sometimes I don't. It depends on how soon I want to see it.

Tch, I remember walking through the aisle seeing $35-$40 as a standard price for most movies.

$25 seems like a bargain to me

i feel like prices get a lil high right before christmas then in november they drop down to 20 again and stay that way till may, then they slowly creep back up during the summer time. just have a threshold and dont pass it. i been starting to get stuff on eBay and i been getting new releases for 13 bucks shipped.

That's what partly what kept me out of the Blu game especially since I adopted other formats in the past about a year in, think DVD/Divx, think LaserDisc..
