The documentary is great. I wish it was longer. Or maybe I'm just spoiled by the three and four hour documentaries on the Alien, LOTR, and Kong sets.

The Production Featurettes are made from footage mostly not seen in the Documentary, so thats an additional 90 minutes.

Nothing can compare to those sets.

Unfortunately, the big Kong set is still only available on DVD. I know I'd probably double-dip if they added a ton of features to the current release.

As far as this release goes, I don't have it yet, but it looks friggin awesome

The short version is this: I think Avatar is an evolutionary leap forward in motion capture technology, the blending of live-action with CGI, and digital filmmaking in general, but it's also a poorly scripted, spectacle-over-story mash-up of various anti-imperialist allegories, and yet another tired example of the "white guy goes native, becomes one with nature, and betrays his own kind" trope. It may sound trivial, but nearly everything I dislike about the film can be summed up in the fact that it so prominently uses the Papyrus typeface. Let me explain. Papyrus is the default font for lazy designers who want their product to look "ancient" or "spiritual." Hence, it's often found on the signage for yoga studios, spas, Thai restaurants, and New Age-y bookstores. To me—and this is my interior graphic designer speaking—the font connotes a superficial attempt to appear profound. Or, to put it more simply, it's cheesy, flaky, shallow. And that's the vibe I get from Avatar, with its over-obvious Big Issue message, Lisa Frank color palette, and wilted brand of patchouli-scented, we're all one with Mother Earth animism. It's left-wing, yes, liberal, sure, eco-friendly, absolutely, but in a fusty, aging- hippy kind of way that seems immediately outdated. (I say this as a self-proclaimed left-wing, liberal environmentalist.) If the movie had feet it would almost certainly be wearing Birkenstocks and hitchhiking toward Burning Man.
I couldn't agree more with you. We feel the same way about the film.

I think it's a tragically missed opportunity, but I guess you can't have it all, right?

Either way, my copy is shipping soon, and I will probably have it around Christmas.

Thanks for the review!

I figured the work was difficult and the film had a lot put into it, but 4 years with only 5 days off a year for Jim is INSANE!

It's rather common in the sweatshops where most our clothes are made

He can dry his tears with the golden statues he won and all the truckloads of money he made off the movie's box office and home media success.

Your review has made me super-stoked. I actually really like the packaging (big fan of the AA here) and can't wait to get my hands on this whenever Amazon gets around to getting it to me.

After reading your later post, I think it'd be nice to have a Cameron commentary too, seeing as how it seems like he has an awful lot to say. I'm not a huge fan of the movie, but it is one of the most-have films of the past several years.

The only thing I would change about the review is to say that Peter Jackson has been giving us massive spectacles onscreen, usually filled with all sorts of heart, since 2001: Fellowship, Two Tower, and Return of the King, along with King Kong.

The LOTR films, I predict, will end up being the more highly regarded films thirty years from now.

I was hoping for some sort of exclusive for Avatar CE but didn't see any. Were you referring to international steelbooks?

I buckled under and ordered it.

I don't like the film. I didn't like it the first time, and liked it even less the second (I do like to give these things a chance). It's an overblown, unoriginal, woefully predictable, badly written, badly acted mess in my opinion.

However the extras look incredibly interesting. And I want those. And I'm a die-hard James Horner fan (even though this is hardly his best work). So it's worth the price of the set.

We've known that set-up for months though.

I'm excited because I never saw the re-release, so it's 16 minutes for me.

Plus, it's easy enough to get excited when your special features are that conclusive. Holy smokes.

Even used as a slam on Avatar (which I love), I love any review that mentions both Lisa Frank and Trapper Keepers. Good times.

Why do reviewers even bother to write reviews for the actual film? I'm pretty the only reason people care to read reviews is because of the AV quality.
