You're right. I was more defending the fact that I don't think this is a 7% caliber movie than anything else. Maybe this is truly a bad movie, but I've seen trailers for movies that looked far worse and they never came close to a 7%. I know trailers are only so much, but I know some movies are as bad as their trailer looks.

Kinda odd that I am somewhat defending a film that I may only rent at some point, but I'm more surprised that the reviews are quite this bad.

I didn't think it looked like something that would be rated this low either, but apparently the critics find it is... Honestly, I'm in a way not surprised. It looked like Twilight all over again. Not to mention Catherine Hardwicke has really only made one really good movie in my opinion, and that was Lords of Dogtown. I mean, it may not be nearly as bad as they're saying, but I'm sure it's not really going to be great either. But it'll probably light the box office on fire and make a lot of money in the teen girl category.

I saw the sneak preview in my town this past Tuesday. It wasn't horrible. I pretty much hate ALL things Twilight so I wasn't expecting much.

Way better than anything on SyFy channel, just nothing to blow you away. Gary Oldman was pretty good as usual, and Amanda Seyfreid was fine. Not a lot of depth to anything.

I was surprised that:

[Show spoiler]All the guys in the film kept their shirts on...and the Werewolf was at least more than just a regular Wolf a la stupid Twilight!

I've given up on Rotten Tomatoes critics. This was much better than 7%. Was it earth shattering...no, but it was pretty damn good if you ask me. Yes it did have some "Twilight" moments, but overall the acting was pretty good and I enjoyed the story as well.

I give it a 3.5/5.

I think you summed up my thoughts on this movie perfectly. 3.5/5 and rounded up to 4 for the poll.

Thumbs up

I, *gulp*, enjoyed this. Granted, I enjoy the Twilight movies, too. My review:

Quote:
The critical response to director Catherine Hardwicke's (Lords of Dogtown, Twilight) version of Red Riding Hood has been downright vitriolic, and I understand why this film, in its content and presentation, would inspire such disdain. Hardwicke has turned the fairy tale recorded and popularized by, among others, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm into an overheated, voguish young-adult love story and werewolf thriller. In other words, it's The Twilight Saga: Red Riding Hood. But I have a confession: I loved it. Not in a traditional, guiltless, this-film-is-award-worthy sense, of course, but rather as a popcorn-movie confection.

The film, co-produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, is set in the medieval hamlet of Daggerhorn. In this version, Red is a beautiful girl named Valerie, played by Amanda Seyfried. She is, of course, torn between two attractive, adoring men: Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), a brooding woodcutter and her childhood sweetheart, and Henry (Max Irons, Jeremy's son), the wealthy lad Valerie's parents (Billy Burke and Virginia Madsen) expect her to wed, an arranged marriage she dreads. As this passionate love triangle reaches fever pitch, Valerie's sister is found dead, a victim of the werewolf living in the forest beyond Daggerhorn, obliterating a long-standing truce. With the townspeople furious and terrified, a local priest (Lukas Haas) sends word to Solomon (Gary Oldman), a Catholic werewolf hunter with violent methods.

If the disparate directorial instincts of Michael Bay and Sofia Coppola were blended, the result might be Catherine Hardwicke or close to her. She has the latter's feminine touch and deep understanding of youthful melancholy and longing, but the former's studio-friendly, over-the-top approach. And since her relatively unrefined directorial debut, Thirteen, she has developed a sharp visual eye. I dare even Red Riding Hood's most ardent detractors not to admire the sumptuous aerial shots of Valerie, dressed in bright red, moving across snow-covered landscapes. I also loved production designer Tom Sanders' (Saving Private Ryan) sets, from the claustrophic rooms of the village to the wilds of the enchanted forest. None of the sets are realistic, nor are they intended to be, but they are delightful in their stylized, atmospheric artificiality. And while the computer-generated werewolf never flirts with photo-realism, the design is neat and satisfactory. And outside of classic Universal monster movies, I prefer "realistic" werewolf designs, i.e. closer to a real wolf than a wolfman.

I'm sorry but @ anyone who gave thiis movie anything higher than a 1/5. I don't even need to see this to know that it's garbage just because Catherine Hardwicke is associated with it. Seyfried's got creepy bug eyes, so the only good thing this film has going for it is Gary Oldman, and apparantly the werewolf who keeps his shirt on.

The problem with RT is that it has no middle ground. Movies are either good p&r bad, when often reviews are middle of the road. RRH and similar films have reviews that claim it does some good and some bad. 3/5. Those are counted as "Rotten."

Catherine Hardwicke has directed a good movie before, so your argument is already out the window. Lords of Dogtown was one of my favorite movies the year it came out, and it widely gets overlooked. It actually has my favorite Heath Ledger performance as well.

It usually helps to actually watch something before you form an opinion on it.

His argument was out the window when he said he doesn't need to see this garbage. Everything else was just added damage.

Wow, you are so right. Being a skateboarder for just about 10 years, I actually love that move, and own it on DVD. I didn't even know Catherine Hardwicke directed it. lol. Heath was great as Skip Emgblom. Even though it was rather fictionalized (I don't believe Sid actually existed, they just created him for the film), it is a great story. Okay, okay, so yes, Lords of Dogtown is the only GREAT film she has directed. You are correct!
