VCR has been long gone here.

I think some good home movies were lost in the process accidentally but oh well stuff happens.

I still have some cassettes that I need to record onto MP3's or something. They are home made stuff but I just hold on to them and ignore them. I really should back them up.

I had the exact opposite... my wife asked me when I was going to throw the VCR out... I told her that as long as it worked there's no harm in keeping it stashed in a closet... We do have VHS tapes still stashed in the end table, and the kiddo likes to watch movies we haven't purchased yet on DVD.

One day after the third world war, someone is going to give me a lot of money for my VCR, and then I will use that money to become ruler of the new world.

Take it out to an empty field somwhere and do the office space copier dance on it. Don't forget the baseball bat.

I picked up a Toshiba DVD recorder / VHS player combo to transfer my VHS tapes over. It offers simple one touch synch recording, and it's really easy to use.

VHS tapes are a major space hog. I'm donating my commercial releases as fast as I can. Can anyone suggest the easiest way to recycle old VHS tapes? I'm hesitant to toss out old birthday recordings etc without having the material erased, but I don't have a quick easy way to erase them. Any suggestions?

Is there any way to get my Panasonic VCR/HDD/DVD Recorder to allow me to burn old store bought tv series tapes onto DVD? When I try now it records for about 5 seconds then stops and says it can't copy the tape because of copy protection. The thing is is that the shows haven't been released on DVD and would rather have them on DVD than tapes.

I'm assuming I am out of luck..?

Take the VCR out to the desert and introduce it to Mr. Smith and Wesson.

Thanks!
I did this recently; works like a charm and I am now VHS free with all my personal stuff on DVD.

But to answer the question posed in the thread's title: sell the VCR to a Duddite; I'm sure it'll be "good enough". :-)

Since I have a home theater PC, I am thinking of getting the hardware/software to capture then use it to burn to disk. If that is too much effort, then I will go with a VCR/DVD combo and burn that way.

I still have two vcr's and will keep them. I had to pull out and use one last week.

Surprisingly i needed to use my DAT a few months ago to retrieve an original recording i did almost 20 years ago. Unfortunately the heat in the attic was too much for some of the parts in the DAT player/recorder. :-(
Luckily i found my backup CD.

Transfer the stuff to dvd then pack and save the VCR for a while.
