Default The most imporatant thing about this news is . . .

. . . that the talking point from the other side (that we had to endure for almost 2 years) :

"HD DVD costs significantly less to manufacture and is more consumer-friendly."
  1. Was an outright lie. (Toshiba was losing money big time on their players)
  2. Was a big consumer ripoff. All the people who were suckered into buying a Toshiba were making a very bad investment. Their players are already obsolete. (Ironic isn't it? BD profile 1.0 players were suposed to be obsolete soon. But they will still be able to play all of the movies coming on Blu for the next several years.)

Yea we should. THe reason there was a war that shouldn't have been was because of them and MS. So what comes around goes around.

I guess. But I hardly think the end of the format war is the most important issue this election year. I doubt there will be an emergency session in Congress to address Warner Bros. studios lack of lossless audio on new Blu releases.

Sadly, this downward trend is not exclusive to Toshiba. With the economy going to shit, we all lose.

i don't get what there is to be happy about the higher ups who were pushing for hd dvd won't lose their jobs and if they do they will get a huge payout , if they keep losing money its the workers and middle management that get fired.

Toshiba must have invested significant amount on R&D as well as in content deals based on expected future profits ..... This is a risky business.

You would be surprised, while buying Toshiba outright would be foolish for either company, they could definitely buy enough of a percantage to force a few member onto the Toshiba board which would give them enough of a say in future strategy.

I'm not saying they should do this though, buying any part of Toshiba isn't a smart prospect right now, not while they remain in the CE industry. If Toshiba sold or spun-off their CE unit (which is looking more and more likely), they would definitely be worth buying into.

I'm mildly facsinated here. I know about Toshiba's CE division like all of us, but I've heard very little about other opeations, save one thing about nuclear power. What all else do they do?

Semi-conductors, they are one of the world's largest producers of silicon chips after Intel, IBM and TSMC. The reason that buying 50% of Sony's Cell and RSX foundries made so much sense was that it would bolster their line-up beyond flash memory which is in real trouble atm where supply has radically outstripped demand. That is the reason why we are seeing many companies, Toshiba especially, try to make flash memory look like the next computing Messiah.

this is exactly the sad thing about it. they did provide a technology alright, no questions about it. however, how much far were they going to support it? Hypothetically, imaging HDDVD won. were the supporters of the format continue to release titles in the best format there is and lossless audio?
