I'm glad there are some LD lovers on here. I have 3 different Pioneer LD players and about 100 discs. Some pretty rare. For those that are looking, yes Ebay you can find specific titles you are looking for, but i've picked up some big sets from people on Craigslist. Plus some old mom and pop video stores sell them.

The uncompressed PCM 2 channel Stereo was 44,056 Hz/16 bit

The compressed 5.1 DTS on Laserdisc was 1.536 Mb/s equivalent to the DTS core on Blu-rays

The compressed 5.1 DolbyDigital was called AC-3 in those days and was the 384 kb/s variety.

The information you posted is accurate. I only collected a few titles on BETA and never collected analog VHS tapes. I have several hundreds of Laserdiscs that I have been selling when a better version of the movie is released on BLU-RAY or DVD. The Laserdisc format DTS sound track was double the bit rate of the DVD movie releases. Laserdisc in general had better sound then DVD but the picture quality was not as good compared to Super bit dual layer DVD’s and other quality dual layer DVD’s. There might be some laserdisc titles that are never released on BLU-RAY or DVD and perhaps I will always have a few Laserdiscs that I will never sell. Good thing my Pioneer Laserdisc is still working. Pioneer makes excellent quality products that can last over 10 years.
Thanks to BLU-RAY we now have 7.1 PCM and 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio that is identical to the studio master with super high bit rates that are better then D-VHS and Laserdisc. Laserdisc and D-VHS both had the same sound quality for the DTS sound tracks.

No it doesn't have HDMI. But it might have a flux capacitor...

That's one of the older models

The latest ones had RCA composite out and S-Video out

Hello Ranger,

I have only just come accross your message, yes there are still plenty of us around who truly enjoy this much loved format.

I to have a number of players because of the investment of all the movies I wanted the hardware to last me, of which it certainly will.

I havn't purchased any disc's for a while because of my employment being very changable, but hopefully I shall be able to pay off a few titles that are reserved with a seller within the next few months.

Sincerest Regards

I complete agree. Blu-Ray vs Laserdisc shouldn't be a serious discussion. Mods close thread.

I know that this is a random question but could someone please explain to me how exactly did 6-Track Stereo work? All I know is that it was exclusive to 70mm Film.

What do you mean 'work' - how it was encoded onto film or actual playback; in terms of the latter - pre-1977 6-track was five front stage channel with mono surround. 'Close Encounters' was the first Dolby 6-track baby boom release that dropped two of the five front channels and added extra bass (4.2) 1978's Superman was the first to experiment with split stereo surround, but the first commercial theatrical release was in fact "Apocalypse Now' (5.1). 15/70mm sound began in 1976's "To Fly" where it's 6-track mix was three front stage with a height channel above the center channel plus split surround and bass. All featured magnetic analog sound, the advent of Dolby digital and DTS sound was one of aspects of studios beginning to faze out 70mm blowup releases

I have to agree! My Turbine Medien (German import) BD of Twister has 7.1 DTS HD MA peaking to very close to 8Mbps!

Really?!

There comes a point where you have to point a finger at a woefully inefficient lossless encode. 8mbs for a 7.1 track seems somewhat excessive.

There is no such thing as "farfield".

There's the cinema mix and the home video nearfield mix, and nearfield is standard for home video releases.

Farfield mixing is the technical term for mixing theatrical audio.
No. That term is not commonly used for the cinema mix.

There is no standard for nearfield remixing. It is just a practice (for low listening level).
Yes there is a standard. You're not mixing for lower listening level, but for homes rather than giant cinemas, which involves different output levels.

Default From what I have studied, this is the one to buy.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...VD_Player.html

This Pioneer DVL-919 is supposedly the sickest, most intense laserdisc player in the universe.

It has no HDMI (none of them do) but it does have S-video and an optical out.

It is also a DvD player and I'm sure you can cook eggs on it, so it does everything.

Pioneer still makes this, but it is crazy expensivo for a dead movement.

Pioneer stopped making laserdisc players for the United States market around 2004. There are some companies that have a few new or refurbished ones in stock. Also I own several Pioneer Laserdisc players and one of them stopped working and needed repaired. I took the player to a authorized Pioneer dealer back around 2005 and they informed me that Pioneer no longer makes the parts to repair Laserdisc players and I was not able to get it repaired since the parts are no longer made. So when these Laserdisc players break you will have to find another working player to play Laserdiscs. In 10 years that might not be a option. Hopefully the Hollywood studios will have re-released most of the old Laserdisc movies on BLU-RAY and DVD. I am sure a few less popular titles might never be released on DVD or BLU-RAY.

Quote mentioning that Pioneer no longer makes Laserdisc players.

“A few Pioneer dealers offer North American specification DVL-919s, and a unit purchased in April 2004 had a manufacture date of December 2003. Pioneer representatives reportedly state that the product is officially discontinued, and that warranty coverage for 919s will be based on the date of manufacture rather than on the date of sale.”

I had Independence Day on laserdisc and the sound quality rocked!

However, I picked up ID4 on Blu-ray and the sound quality, totally blows away what was on the LD.

That opening scene, where
[Show spoiler]the massive alien spaceship roars over the moon, on its way
to earth,
just shakes my enter room and rattles the windows.

The LD version never did that.

Agreed the BD is a lot better, but the LD was no slouch in its day, it most certainly crushed the DD track on the DVD which sounded overly compressed by comparison. The best A-B comparison for this was the canyon scene.

I prefer the LD version of Talking Heads Stop Making Sense. I run it over my analog outs through my stereo amp.

For comparison I did the theatrical soundtrack from the Blu-ray which is the closest comparison you can have.

The Blu-ray sounds perfect. Too perfect. To me the LD sounds much more natural and like I'm actually at the concert.
