Regarding "framing" of movie posters, first off you want to know what size to get. Original authentic movie posters are 27x40 inches (but beware there are lots of reproductions being sold in the same size online so be careful when you make your purchases if you want originals and I think everyone knows what I mean when I say that).

Secondly, depending on the rarity of the poster, you may want to have it custom framed. I mean, if you have a $200 poster that has a lot of potential to increase in value (Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings, etc), I personally would not go with a $20 frame, but that is just me. But here are some tips, hopefully this will help answer some questions from people here, and perhaps some new people who have yet to post....

If you go the inexpensive route, yes, Michael's Arts & Craft stores do carry 27x40 inch frames. They generally are around $30, but they have had them on sale for as low as $9.99 I have heard from others here. Also, check the Sunday newspaper, usually every week they have an ad in the coupons section with a 40% off (sometimes 50% off one item) coupon, which can save you some change. Another source is Aaron Brother's Framing if you have them in your area, they too run coupons in Sunday newspapers as well and are about the same price.

Another thing to consider is this. Generally those inexpensive frames have a cardboard backing to them. Cardboard is highly acidic and I don't recommend using it as a backing for a movie poster, so to avoid that, you can speak to any local frame store and ask how much they would charge for a sheet of acid-free backing. Not sure how much the going rate is for that, but it would help protect your poster. Perhaps bring the frame into the store and see first if the acid-free backing will fit with the poster inside the frame, it may be too thick to do so, but it should. That way the backing of the poster will be acid-free, one less thing to worry about. Of course you probably won't need to go through all of this for a $10 reprinted poster.

If you decide to go the professional framing route, for those that want everything to look the very best, or have a very nice rare poster they want to protect perhaps for investment purposes, or they had autographed, or it simply means a great deal to them, bring the poster in to a frame store and the first thing you need to do is explain to the framer that the movie poster is a "collectible" and not a reproduction. NEVER...EVER...let the framer "drymount" the poster. What I mean by that is don't let them offer to permanently bond the poster with a styrofoam backing. That process is irreversible and will de-value your poster to nothing. Once you alter an original movie poster this way, there is really no need to go any further in framing it, because the poster is now pretty much worthless (see the last part of this message for a "you won't believe this but it's true" story).

You would want the poster to be loose inside the frame, between the glass and the acid-free backing. Yes, that's right, you will see the ripples or imperfections on the poster as it is between the glass and the frame, but the collectibility value is still there. Nothing on my walls is dry-mounted and never will be. When glass is concerned, I go with Ultra-Violet (UV) glass, despite the fact that I live in Seattle where heat is not really an issue. But it is piece of mind for me, and worth the extra money. I know in hotter climates, the glass itself can get hot, which is why some prefer UV-clear plexi-glass. I have never used it, so I can't really comment on it but I would assume it would be safe to use and do the job nicely.

Never handle a poster with dirty hands, always make sure they are clean and dry. Remember a movie poster is nothing more than a large piece of colored paper, and fingerprints can show up, dirt marks, etc. Also, NEVER EVERY use rubber bands when rolling a poster up. Good lord, don't do that! They will leave a ripple effect through the entire poster under the band itself, especially when the rubber band is tight on the poster. When it comes to movie posters, rubber bands are the enemy!

Regarding my dry-mounting story, I was once contacted by a dealer who told me they had a new way of dry-mounting a poster but it wasn't a permanent process, that they could easily remove the poster from the backing with no harm done to the poster. I shook my head and said "I highly doubt it" and the guy working for the dealer said it was legit. Now, one would think they would test this out on say a $5 poster or a reprint, something of value, right? Well, they didn't, instead their "test" poster was an original 1980 Empire Strikes Back style "A", the poster that was considered the "Gone with the Wind" pose of Han leaning towards Leia to embrace, the poster that was recalled because Billy Dee Williams' likeness wasn't on the poster. Simply put a really rare Star Wars poster that was incredibly nice looking. That is the poster they decided to test this new way to dry-mount, and....as you can expect, it failed. The poster could not be removed without damaging it.

So the moral of this story is don't dry-mount expensive rare authentic movie posters, to quote the character Mr. Morelli in "City Slickers" during his speech to the classroom...and don't do drugs.

Kinsella is the expert on this thread, but I will give you some pointers.

1. Size is probably the most important. Pre 1983 US one sheets are 27 x 41. Post 1983 US one sheets are 27 x 40. There was a transition period were there were both, but by 1989 ALL one sheets were 27 x 40. A lot of reprints are considerably smaller or larger (maybe 1" off).

2. Movie. You are not going to see "fakes" of certain movies. Example: you WILL see reprints of the Original Star Wars posters. You will NOT see reprints of "Ewoks the battle for endor" because nobody wants a poster of that movie.

3. Quality of the print. Typically you will see "cropped", "altered colors" or "fuzzy" artwork on reprints as they were done with a lesser quality printing methods.

My suggestion is if you have any questions about authenticity of a poster, join a forum such as http://www.movieposterforum.com and ask the members. They are very helpful and very knowledgeable.

Yeah most Ive seen on line tend to drop by at least half price just for the holes. But as always with collecting it depends on the value of whos buying.

oh okay,i went to my grandpa's checking out his garage and found a cast signed movie posted but ONE had 4 thumb tack's on each corner,Strange it would have it since 2 were rolled up in paper tube

the film was superman:the movie 1978

first one was in perfect mint shape,no fade's,cast signed w/ black marker



second was one like styled like this with 4 thumb tacks on each corner,signed in silver marker around the logo.

Ya the two posters i got, The Lion King and Wall-e, were both 27x40 and double sided.

Yes they do, you just have to check your local store once in a while. They don't usually advertise their framed art sales.
