I second Aftersun, emotional gut punch of a movie, and one of my favourites of last year.

Lots of good films to choose from, I'm not sure what you might be interested in, but let's say you might start with Aftersun. It's a recent film that I liked a lot, and I was pleased with MUBI's release.
Shiva Baby was just a very brief audio glitch though, right? Like a few seconds?

I can't confirm, as I got the US release (which also works on region B players), but I was under the impression that the entire film's audio was compromised.

So, I’ve watched Under the Silver lake which I loved and Lamb which I liked until the ending… no spoilers…. But yeah. However it still had merit.

I got my first Mubi release. I bought it from Amazon, it had the shrink wrap and slipcover and yet it came locked with this abomination.

I assume this isnt Mubi's clever way to stand out on the market. I guess this is something thats used in stores, weird that it somehow ended up being sold online.

It’s called red tag which is the security device HMV stores used to protect their product from shoplifters.

You can remove if you have a heavy duty magnet. There’s videos on YouTube showing you how.

Amazon have history if you don’t buy day 1 of passing off shop returns they buy from the distributor at a discount as new and not always giving you the customer a discount.

HMV get much of their stock for stores sale and return so if not sold in a few months of release date it has to be returned to the distributor who then sell on to the likes of Amazon and Zavvi.

Give Amazon customer services a bollocking on the online chat and demand a refund. If you kick up enough fuss may even get a few £ of store credit as compensation as they’re passing off shop soiled stock as new.

If I ever get a red tag now I just stroll into my local HMV and ask if they can remove it. Bring your receipt/invoice if you think they'll be funny about it, but they're usually happy to oblige. Last time it happened to me it was from a chazza and I didn't notice 'til I got home!

Yeah, the first thing I did was google how to get rid of the damn thing, sadly the magnets I have on hand arent heavy duty. Opening the case was simple enough, since I found another solution for it online but getting the disc out was a problem. I had to use brute force and bend the disc slightly to get it out but checked it out and it plays fine thankfully.

Sending it back and getting a refund would be too much of a hassle since I dont live in the UK and I bought the movie as part of the 2 for £15 deal Amazon has going on right now so I might not have been able to get it as cheaply.

I order from Amazon a lot, both the UK and US and never had this happen before. Oh well, it all worked out so at least I learned something new.

Its nice that they are good sports about it. I like HMV a lot, I occasionally order from them to a friends address in the UK, I would use them a lot more if they shipped abroad.

Australia have a similar but different system to red tag that uses locking tabs at the top and bottom of the long edge to needs two magnets to open.

Had to YouTube how to open as JBHifi sent me a BD which was still locked they obviously got from one of their stores. They wanted me to return but didn't want the hassle.

Anyway no longer relevant as they now blacklist UK addresses after we changed our VAT payable on all imports rules.

Surprised that MUBI hasn't announced a blu for The Delinquents / Los delincuentes (2023). I enjoyed that a lot, saw it when MUBI put it in cinemas in March this year.

MUBI have never released every theatrical title on disc, and feels like they’re reconsidering their release strategy with bimonthly releases rather than a new film every month.

Damn... now I have to worry about getting Mubi releases I might want early enough not to lose the slips.

Or could it have been a one time issue - maybe the slip was damaged and someone decided to mail it to you without it? I've seen stranger things happen, such as receiving the WAC Tarzan the Ape Man in a black DVD box with only the disc inside.

First one I saw in HMV not long after release had no slip but when I finally bought it recently online from them it did, so it’s as much a lottery as a time based thing.

Remember when they released Sorcerer? No slips anywhere for months and after that all copies seemed to have them

I don't think that can be taken to mean anything in production terms given that Mubi shrinkwrap the case and then put the slip on (rather than having the slip under the wrap also). This means it could have no slip because it fell off and no-one noticed; it got banged up and binned for being in awful condition; or it was there but a customer played silly beggars; or quite a few other possibilities not worth iterating.

Certainly I've seen examples in the not too distant past of HMV having a bunch of Mubi films racked together or on end displays for promotion and it being 50/50 slip/no slip on the cases.

There definitely was a grouping of releases from late 2020 to mid 2021 that consistently seemed to have reduced production of slipcovers though, and First Cow falls under that lineup. Matthias & Maxime is another where I've never seen it with a slipcover out in the wild.

They stopped doing that a while ago. They shrinkwrap over the slip now. I've seen copies of Decision to Leave with shrinkwrap over and under the slip so I assume the decision was made some time last year during the run on that release. Every new release since has been shrinkwrapped over the slip.
