The live-action and animated actors in Who Framed Roger Rabbit

which was preceeded by

The Penguins and Dick Van Dyke dancing in Mary Poppins

and that was after

Jerry danced with Gene Kelly in Anchors Aweigh.

I'd have to say,

2001: A Space Odyssey, that's a given

In Star Wars Episodie IV (Special Edition), The Millenium Falcon lifting off and escaping Moss Eisley (sp).

Millenium Falcon Chase sequence in "Empire Strikes Back" after they left the Hoff System.

All of the Space Battles from Return of the Jedi.

The Nostromo landing on LV426 in Alien
The Jump Ship landing on LV426 in Aliens

The Alien Queen

The Predator

The T-1000

All the Special Effects in Jurassic Park

Freeway Chase sequence in The Matrix: Reloaded

Cave Troll Sequence in Fellowship of the Ring

The Slave One vs Jedi Fighter Sequence in "Attack of the Clones"

CGI Yoda

All the Special Effects in Speilberg's version of "War of The Worlds", IMO still some of the most convincing Visuals to date.

The final battle in Return of the King

((sombody's been watching too much Family Guy like myself LOL)))

All the Special Effects in the First Transformers.

All the Special Effects in The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons

Transformers really did it for me SFX-wise. I dont think I had ever seen such a fluid CG/real life mix in a movie before. I mean, they look real to me, solid. Great job there.

Also, the F-15's defending Air Force One in, well... Air Force One. Not the best effects ever by a long shot but my jaw dropped in how cool those scenes were.

Also:

Yoda against Darth Tyranuss in Episode II. I was really afraid when I heard Yoda was gonna throw down but after seeing it, Yoda is the man!! (or whatever it is he is)

I agree with Aliens.

AvP was not that impressive.

Instead of doing things right {puppet} they went for the ALL CGI ALL THE TIME!!!!11!!!! approach which always looks like crap compared to something that the actors can interact with.

The tidal wave in Deep Impact.

The waterspout scene in Twister.

The boat attack and following escape through the woods in War of the Worlds (2005).

I'm sure I'll think of more...

I remember the first time I saw the fighting skeletons (as kid), how blown away I was. Harryhausen was way ahead of his time.

The opening of Blade Runner.

City landscapes of The Fifth Element.

The Colluseum in Gladiator.

Several shots of the DeLorean and actor duplicates in the same scenes in Back To The Future trilogy.

Davy Jones in POTC II & III - the most convincing CGI character I have ever seen. Unbeliveable!

Incorrect sir, yes there was a lot of CG queen , however they did use practical queen effects as well including puppets.

..and the CG queen was still very impressive.

Edit: quote from wiki - "The Alien queen was filmed using three variations: a 4.8-meter practical version, a 1.2-meter puppet, and a computer-generated version. The practical version required 12 puppeteers to operate"

The latest SFX that I thought was great was the opening shot of the spaceship
in "Sunshine". Looks amazing in bluray.

The effects from the old school movies from my youth impressed me the most:

Star Wars (1977) -- From the opening shot of the Imperial star cruiser 'til the end, I was amazed.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind -- especially the mother ship rising over Devil's Tower near the end of the film.

Alien -- great looking monster; never looked like a man in a cheap rubber suit, even though it was a man in a rubber suit.

Blade Runner -- as others have mentioned, the cityscapes were impressive.

The Thing (1982) -- Rob Bottin's effects were great, especially the scene of where the heart attack victim's head detaches itself and sprouts eyes and legs.

The Howling -- Rob Bottin again. I saw this movie before An American Werewolf in London, and so The Howling's scenes of people transforming into werewolves impressed me more than those from the other movie.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit -- the blending of live action and animation was amazing, especially since the camera wasn't locked down like in most live action/animation films. They really went the extra mile to add the light and shadows to the characters, too.

Years later I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, and it was a real eye opener! Most of the effects that still hold up today.

"Wanted" had a lot of scenes that blew me away, but one that really sticks out is the part where the guy (I forgot his name) runs down the hallway and flies out the window, shooting assassins as he's flying. I love the way the glass shards are plastered to his face. It's awesome.
