My brother worked in Editorial on Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within for quite a number of years. One day I visited the Square office in downtown Honolulu, and he screened the scene when Aki Ross rises (i.e. floats) up from her chair to look at the world through a window. It was AMAZING! At that time...creating realistic looking CGI people was SO new...it blew me away!
Too bad the film wasn't well-received, but at least Aki Ross later showed up in Anamatrix! The Wachowski brothers were obviously impressed with the film too ![]() |

I forgot to mention the first reveal of Harvey Dent as Two-Face in The Dark Knight- yes, I'd seen similar EFX before, but I distinctly remember cheering in my head, "Yes! They nailed his look exactly!" Last edited by blu-mood; 07-23-2009 at 08:01 PM. |

I've always been mesmerized by special effects. Some of the ones that really blew me away would be:
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"...pretty much the whole movie. "Transformers," most of the movie, especially the highway chase and the battle in the city. "Knowing," the accident scenes, and then the ending. Any battle scene in "Lord of the Rings." I got chills when I saw the elephants stomping through the battle of Minas Tirith. "The Matrix Revolutions," the battle of Zion, and the final battle between Neo and Smith (the slow-motion punch scene still impresses me!) "The Matrix Reloaded," the 100-man burly brawl. "The Matrix," bullet-time! "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith," the opening battle of Coruscant "Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones," the asteroid chase scene and the clone war battle later on. "Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace," the pod-racing scene. "Independence Day," when it first came out, all of the battle scenes really blew me away. ...what can I say, battle scenes really impress me. I've also been really impressed by all of the CGI-animated films. All of the Pixar films are really impressive. Both of the "Final Fantasy" movies are great. I just watched "Dragon Hunters," and it has some great graphics in it too. |

I remember the first time I saw the fighting skeletons (as kid), how blown away I was. Harryhausen was way ahead of his time.

The opening of Blade Runner.
City landscapes of The Fifth Element. The Colluseum in Gladiator. Several shots of the DeLorean and actor duplicates in the same scenes in Back To The Future trilogy. Davy Jones in POTC II & III - the most convincing CGI character I have ever seen. Unbeliveable! |
