Default Nintendo begins holiday posturing efforts

http://money.cnn.com/2007/07/11/news...ex.htm?cnn=yes

In short, Nintendo is already claiming they won't have enough Wii's for Christmas. Pity. By now I would think everyone who wants a Wii has one, as they're readily available.

My favorite

That's so ridiculously simple it might just be effective.

I think they're just creating artificial shortages. It's old technology. There's no reason that they wouldn't be able to make enough to meet the demand. But hey, good for Nintendo...at least they're more innovative than M$

Because they're milking the artificial shortage as long as they possibly can. They're either holding them back or simply deliberately not making more.

The second the 360 pricedrops, there will be Wiis-a-plenty

Bad press maybe. But Microsoft just replaced my defective unit with a brand new one. They also reimbursed me for the charge to fix the thing. All around 360 is still a good buy my friend.

I dunno. Bit odd for a console to continue to have shortages 1 year+ after launch. Wrecks of a problem in manufacturing if true. Either that or nintendo is intending to keep production levels skimming the level of demand.

All I know is I want a Wii and can't find one anywhere unless I to pay $450+ for it. I just want to find one at retail and be done with it. I can't believe there are still shortages on this product.

Wii is a pile of cow dung. I feel blessed i was able to sell it used to someone on craigslist when i had the chance, i couldnt have been more unhappy with a console if i tried.

sounds like a bunch of rubbish to me. sure its a good ploy, seeing a big stack of ps3 or xbox 360s does not make you think that it is very popular. I can see how just having a few here or there makes you think you better pick one up while they are still in stock.
I can understand right at launch and up until the after the Christmas season it is always hard to find a new console but second Christmas in a row give me a break.
its a big gimmick just like the console its self , but that just my two cents on the matter

Nintendo did the same thing back in the 80s. Anyone remember the "chip shortages" for Super Mario and Zelda 2s?

Turned out when someone poked into it 10 years later, that they told the companies they could do their own manufacturing if they could find quality components.

What do you know, no one's chips met Nintendo standards! Even after independant labs judged them of equal or superior quality!

And given that they just announced both Zapper and Power Pad 2K7, can ROB be far behind? They seriously believe that happy days are here again

The second 360 drops, it becomes a direct price competitor to Wii. Shiny graphics, better games, biggest titles aren't seen as "for kids" by the mainstream. The fad is going to be played out after Christmas.

Notice all the bestselling Wii titles are all "base" stuff, and things for the WiiSports crowd (a bunch of which i believe are selling to people buying the system and looking for a second Wiimote, aren;t they tricky?)

1. Wii Play w/ Remote—Nintendo
2. Mario Party 8—Nintendo
3. Resident Evil 4—Capcom
4. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess—Nintendo
5. Super Paper Mario—Nintendo
6. Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree—Nintendo
7. Pokemon Battle Revolution—Nintendo
8. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix—EA
9. Warioware: Smooth Moves—Nintendo
10. Rayman Raving Rabbids—Ubisoft

Virtually none of those titles, Resident Evil 4 is the only one, appeal to the mainstream US audience. That should be telling right there. It's all kids and base titles. Once again Nintendo's E3 and general strategy is "We've learned form the mistakes of the past, that's why we're still shipping the same old shit"

It's wise by Nintendo and it'll work short term.

They know the real crunch is going to start happening in the 4th quarter of this year, and arguably even earlier, when both the 360 and the PS3 start seeing more popular multiplatform titles and other leading A titles that they don't have.

They know they have to milk every last, precious second before that all occurs.
