I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the matter. The picture above shows how each system has fared through their first X amount of weeks. I find it quite impressive how good the PS3 is selling, despite hearing all over the place how it's not selling good at all.

In my opinion, it almost seems like it is doing better than the 360. I say this because it is/was more expensive than the 360 has ever been. See the following numbers:

Launch PS3 prices:
20 gig: $499
60 gig: $599

Launch 360 prices:
Core System: $299
Regular System: $399

With the above numbers, and the sales data, it shows how this system is anything but poor.

Are these worldwide numbers? Because the wall street journal printed an article last friday where it said the PS3 sold 1.3 million units Jan-Oct 2007, while Xbox 360 sold 2.6 million in the same time period. It said in the chart that it were US retail sales only.

I would love to give a link, but the www.wsj.com requires paid subsciptions (and I am not sharing mine, sorry)

Edit:
here is the chart

I was never and still am not worried about PS3 sales. It'll do fine, especially once the price inevitably drops and games inevitably get better (cumulatively, as well as each successive generation of titles taking better advantage of the PS3's resources).

No it is not America only, it is sales throughout the entire world.

the chart isn't comparing the 2 formats currently...but rather at this point of the 360's life cycle...when the 360 was a year old, rather than 2 years old..

the 360 is more established at this point and we'll get a real good look at how the 2 formats compare around next christmas..

both systems are good..but the PS3 just suits what I want in a game system more....that's all..

Once the ps3 reaches a critical price point I imagine sales will spike quite well, as the legions of ps2 owners decide to upgrade.

Each price drop has been followed by a big sales boost, and it only has one way to go, up.

are you sure its the entire world?? because it says right on the chart "US only" and those numbers seem kinda low for the entire world

VGchartz's numbers are total garbage
It's near impossible to find real sale numbers on the internet

Looks like there should be a peak in sales just about now with sales close to a million over Christmas.

as soon as the BIG 3 are released (Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4) the ps3 sales are going to go through the roof (u can even add the new final fantasy game to the list) Those games have an almost mystical aura around them that cannot be beat and are definite system sellers.

don't forget FFXIII....and I'm not even big into RPG's anymore..

but I played FFVII and thought it was the best games I've ever played...I'll bite on FFXIII when it drops later next year most likely..

plus I would expect RE5 to drop around christmas 08...

It is true that compared to the 360 the PS3 is selling poorly in America.

In most of the rest of the world, the PS3 is selling better than the 360 did at the same point in the lifecycle.

This is why the worldwide numbers match almost exactly.

I honestly believe that while the format war is helped by the PS3, it's hurting the PS3 sales. If people were confident in Blu-Ray, the PS3 would sell more.

There are absolutely no valid statistics concerning console sales at this point. Vgchartz and NDP are absolute rubbish. Annecdotal evidence from a Best Buy salesman is about as reliable as both. Neither account for the international market aggregate.

Most likely, the 360 has sold 9-11 million, the Wii has sold 11 million and the PS3 has sold about 6 million. My numbers are not reliable, but having read a crap load of threads from Playstation.com, Game Industry, and several other sites, that's the ballpark.

One thing for sure is that certainly more than 1.3 million PS3s have been sold in the US.

I think its selling great for its price range. $399 and $499 is a lot of money. It sold as much as X-box 360 did when it was 2yrs old and that was priced lower. Thats what the OP is trying to say.

Just wanted to correct what might be a typo. When the XBOX360 was one year old. It will be interesting to see how things look when the PS3 is 2 years old (near end of next year) compared to the XBOX360 now (at 2 years old).

When the 360 was a year old, it was in a coffin waiting to be returned to MS.

I think we're going to see much higher PS3 sales in Europe, Australasia and Asia help close the gap in TOTAL sales next year and the difference in US sales will reduce considerably so that's no longer helping the 360 keep its year sales lead.
