Default hdtv better with lights on?

i have samsung 40" lcd, and when watching blu-ray movies with the lights off it looks fine. but today when i was watching pirates3 i got up to go check something and turned the lights on, and wow what a differince, i cant believe i was seeing the same move, like i said it looks good with it off, but for some resone its much more detailed and clear(to me anyway) when its on, is it because to room is brighter and can see the whole tv? or am i just seeing things?

your eyes can focus better, put a couple 7.5-15watt nightlight bulbs behind your tv for an ambi-light.

LCD... usually better with ambient light as they are brighter. The ambient light hides the relatively poor black levels on LCD (even the best).

Plasma... better with the lights off. They are usually duller but handle black levels much better. it will also stop reflections on the screen... Wear black on a dark sofa (even better).

I got LCD. So I could see my libation in comfort and not fumble for it in the dark and knock it over. If I had plasma I'd be forever trying to get wine stains out .

Similar experience here but to a far lesser degree. I have a plasma and notice that the blacks seem darker when there's just a bit of ambient light in the room. I usually keep a shaded lamp with a 60W bulb running in the corner of the room but I think quite a bit less would work as well.

No man, just put blinking christmas light around the border of your TV. That should do it. Preferably the colored ones!

I put two illuminated PC fans on top with a 12v power supply and a 25ohm rheostat from Radio Shack to control speed/brightness.

Sorry about the cell phone pics.

Actually I keep a string of clear Christmas lights around the ceiling of the entire room for ambient viewing.

I used to do this in my dorm room and I turned them on when we watched movies or played videogames.
