Default CNBC article on format war!!!

http://www.cnbc.com/id/22184987

Atleast he acknowledged the NBC involvement from the start.

He strokes the massive increase in HD Players, but then brings minor reference to disk sales. "If disc sales were any indication...."

I loathe those kind of references.

"The blogs say this is to be expected since HD DVD players are being bought by movie fans; Blu-ray players are acquired by gamers who may also want to watch the occasional movie."

I just bought a Panasonic BD player to replace my Samsung. What does that have to do with gaming?

He says that standalones are neck-and-neck, then says that without the PS3 (which wasn't included in standalones of course) there wouldn't even be a competition.

It sounds to me like without the PS3, there actually would be a competition, instead of one format slowly dying. It's a bad sign when a corporate conglomerate starts using their news division to spread FUD.

"Take PS3 out of the mix and there isn't even a competition here."

A lot of people, like me, bought the PS3 because it was, at the time, the best available Blu-ray player on the market. I think the new Panny beats it at the moment, but once the PS3 lands the 1.1 profile update, it'll once again be the leading Blu-ray player available.

Yawn. Another day, another questionable article from Goldman.

No surprise this sounds one-sided. Afterall, it's also the same company that runs MS-NBC. Wouldn't have expected anything less from them.

Yea, I just sent him an email letting him no that he knows nothing as he only talks about Bourne this week, when the real story will be with Harry Potter.

He totally missed the boat and the chance to talk about the real news this week.

"Take PS3 out of the mix and there isn't even a competition here."

How is that? 700,000 HD units. 2.7 Million Blu Ray. Remove the 2 Million PS3 and it's still 700,000 BD units against 700,000 HD units. Why is there "No Competition Here"?

Fuzzy math.

I like this excerpt:

I say neck-and-neck because I haven't seen any hard evidence that consumers are buying PS3's BECAUSE there's also a Blu-ray player inside. The PS3 relationship continues to be a boon for the Blu-ray format, but what's amazing is how close HD DVD continues to keep this race.

Immediately after he mentions the 3:1 sales ratio in favor of BD on Black friday. Hey Dorkus, you think maybe that's some "hard evidence" that PS3 owners actually are buying movies? Also how exactly is that an example of things being so "close"?

I'm amazed that people will argue that player sales are even or that HD-DVD is ahead then they can't reconcile the difference in movie sales. "Gosh, I just can't figure out why BD sells more given less player sales AND a lower attach rate." Sure you can't, because it's mathematically impossible. The assumptions are bogus.

Voted...I agree seems a very contridictory article...1st he says if you remove the players its pretty much 'neck and neck', but then goes on to say there is no competition if you remove the PS3?

EDIT - A lot of people drawing the same conclusions as me, just typing faster

(1) "i've seen no hard evidence that people are buying PS3 BECAUSE of its blu-ray movie playing..."

RIGHT HERE, I AM YOUR EVIDENCE...movie playing #1, original intent. but it would be inconvenient (al gore) to take me and all other people like me into account

(2) "400 percent increase in HD-DVD sales..." yeah when you start from NOTHING, "percent increases" sure can get high....the biggest SCAM STATISTIC in history, whoever bites on it is a pure MORON
