Default Need recommendation

So.. I have a PS3 and an RCN dvr/cable box. I want a decent 5.1 system (I'll settle for component instead of hdmi if need be) for around 400 or less, including speakers.

Anyone have any recommendations? I've seen an onkyo 505 for 250, then I'd need to find speakers.

Thanks in advance for everyones help

Here's a 7.1 Onkyo system w/HDMI for $429, and includes free ground shipping.

I like Vanns.com, pretty good prices and customer service. Hope you find what you're looking for.

FYI, the HTSR800 doesn't decode audio over HDMI... something to keep in mind
Crutchfields research on this stuff is very reliable... not always the best price, but great info...

From the Hands on Research section:
"the receiver cannot decode the audio signal via the HDMI input so a separate optical digital, coaxial digital, or analog stereo cable must also be used."

True, he would also have to use digital audio, but for what he's wanting to spend, the HTSR800 is a pretty good deal, considering it's the receiver, speakers and sub all in one package. We have to keep in mind that not everyone has the money to spend on the perfect home theater system, nor do they want to wait another year to be able to afford what will be outdated by the time they can afford it.

I'm one of those people that can't afford things too.... I think the HTSR800 system is probably incredible, mostly because I drank the Onkyo Kool-aid 6 or 7 years ago... When I was researching I noticed that tid-bit and wanted to make sure the OP knew as well... If that's not a major point, then its the way to go...

I wanted multi-channel PCM so i'm saving up for some speakers and mating it with a Onkyo 605... (couldn't afford the 705 or 805).....

Ya, I'm thinking I'm going to go with the 805. Vanns has it for $750...

I think the Sony STR-DG710 would suit you well. Currently $199 on Amazon. You will have to buy speakers, but this receiver is good bang for the buck, and for a truly good surround experience you don't want to use the crappy speakers that those HTIB's come with anyway.

What tv do you have????

component will not carry 1080p

Best to save up some more money, $400 your not going to get much, it will make noise & that is about it.

ive got a cheap-o tv, got it from tiger direct for 500$

Konka, i forget the model name but its 32" upscales to 1080i, 1366x768 res (i think thats the res on these)

gonna be upgrading tv once i get my tax return, 50" 1080p, here i come

those onkyo links are great, i dont mind using separate for audio as my cable box and ps3 will both output audio where i tell them to and same with video. will prob save 500 and get one of those.

I bought an Onkyo HT-S650 6 or so years ago... It's been great. If it weren't for lossless audio, I wouldn't even be upgrading...
I'd bet you'll have a similar experience with the HT-800... The sound is great out of my current system... Onkyo, by far, makes the best HTIB systems...
