Arrow Sunshine (2007)

Okay I have just finished watching Danny Boyle’s Sunshine staring Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans. I had previously seen this at the cinema so I was looking forward to watching it in full HD 1080p. For those who do not know the story behind this movie it is essentially a save the world Sci-fi movie about a bunch of astronauts and scientists on a mission to deliver a bomb to reignite the sun which is dying and causing an Ice Age back on Earth. If you like science fiction then I am confident that you will enjoy this movie. I would give it 3.5 Stars out of 5.

Video: This is a stunning presentation. Colours are vibrant and blacks are deep and clear. The only sequences which I found annoying were some of the “glare in lens” which I am assuming is deliberate by the director. Other than that I cannot really fault the movies picture quality. Certainly up there with Apocalypto IMO. I would give it 4.5 out of 5

Audio: It contains a DTS HD 5.1 which sizzles. It’s really a tremendous sound track . The deep sound of space and the sizzling effect of the sun across the ship is fantastic. On one or two occasions I found vocals to be diminished mainly when the actors were trying to speak across the alarms going off on the ship. But I think this is a calibration issue with my centre speaker. I will have to sort that out over the coming weekend. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Supplements/Extras: Not really into extras but it does contain deleted scenes and commentary from Danny Boyle which I have not experienced and not likely to in the near future. Lol.

Overall I would give this movie a 3.75 out of 5. I am reluctant to give it a 4 as there have been better sci-fi’s but rarely has space looked this good.

I don't get it. Wasn't this a 1.1 Blu-Ray? Why no mention of it?

woohoo, so I cracked and shelled out £23.99 for it, been waiting for it since I watched it in the Cinema when it was released here (several months before US release).
Quality assessment to come!
Unfortunately the UK release doesn't get BDJ enhancements, oh well.

I wouldn't say that the movie necessarily would be worth $35 to everyone here, definitely me though, but I would say that the visuals would definitely be worth it alone.

All I can say is, it's now my favourite title on Blu-ray. Jaw droppingly stunning, will have to watch it again sometime, and the DTS running at 1.5 Mbps (best my receiver's gonna do) sounded stunning too.
Great use of surrounds and bass.
Now I'll save the extras for another time...
Man, if this title were a burger I'd eat it.

Default Sunshine - Worth buying??

Hey I saw in the poll a lot of user interest in Sunshine and that the review was up on this site so I started reading down to where it said to give away any of the movie would be a disservice to the viewer. So my question is after having my interest sparked enough to watch this movie, is it a keeper, worth purchasing? Will I want to rewatch it once I have seen it through or will it just be a, oh I know what happens in the end and just own it to turn others onto it?

Are you going to want to watch again after your first time? You're going to have to watch it again. It's kind of like M:I in that regard. There are things that you might not have caught the first time around. Maybe it's not that complicated, but it's definitely a good enough movie to buy.

Question Sunshine "AVC@16mbps"?

How come Sunshine's back cover says encoded in AVC@16mbps when everyone says the PQ is great? wouldn't a 16mbps AVC encode be really low in PQ quality?..like mpeg-2 single layer BD-25 disc days. I remember fantastic 4(1) was encoded at 18mbps and the PQ was lousy.

Maybe this is a typo? Can anyone check bitrates on their players?

Well it is probably VBR so it bounces up and down from that. I have not seen any movies with a constant bitrate encoding. Pan's Labyrinth averages around 16. I have not seen Sunshine (yet) but not all movies require as high bitrates as other. It depends on the lighting, colors, etc of the movie.
