Default HD DVD Add-on Player Sold Out At Amazon!

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player sold out at Amazon.com
Published: 1 hours ago; 10:03am PDT
by Marcus Lai

Xbox 360 owners have nabbed enough Xbox 360 HD DVD Players to sell out the initial allocation at Amazon.com.
The $199 external option, due out on Nov. 7, will allow owners to play new HD DVD format high-definition flicks.

The item ranked No. 2 last week at Amazon.com's Computer & Video Games Top-Sellers.

Amazon.com published an apology to customers for the sell-out status and requests that interested buyers sign up for an e-mail notification when the item is back in stock.

The first allocation of Xbox 360 HD DVD Players will include a copy of Peter Jackson's King Kong on HD DVD and an Xbox 360 Universal Remote Control.

Microsoft this week dropped an Xbox Live to Xbox 360 owners to allow the console to play movies and games in 1080p, the holy grail resolution for high-definition enthusiasts.

Microsoft has sold 6 million Xbox 360 consoles to worldwide markets to date
As expected, this has been making its rounds like wildfire amongst the Xbox fanboys and HD-DVD fanboys.

It's nice news, but what was the allocation of units to Amazon?

Here's a hint: A whole hell of a lot less than the 400,000 PS3's coming out by year's end, for starters.

But don't tell them that. Suddenly, even though the PS3 was being bashed and "isn't going to be that important in the format war" you guessed it...HD-DVD is well on its way to sure victory because of this earth shattering news.

They probably had an allocation of 100 and someone from Microsoft bought them all just to create some hype.

In all seriousness, I wouldn't doubt too much that they legitimately sold out, but I agree that the allocation was nowhere near 500,000 units.

It's extrememly likely that the PS3 will be sold out until well into the first quarter, so we'll be talking about an installed base in the millions in the not-too-distant future.

I think it bodes well for both platforms. If Xbox 360 users are excited about watching HD movies on their console then it stands to reason that PS3 users will be equally as excited.

great knews for HD

another nail in the coffin of fanboyism.

What I am wondering about is how many of these went into homes that already have a HD-DVD player in them, rather than going into homes that are new to HD-DVD. It seems like a whole lot of them were snatched up by members of AVS Forum who already have HD-DVD players.

This is kinda like the news where the 360 sold out in Japan as well - almost a full year after it had launched. It has little significance unless we don't know the allocation number. That is why the EBGames pre-order thing made better news because we know its allocation number then.

I do hope that MS won't sell those guys with the add-on out: no way to output anything better than 640 kpbs Dolby Digital and 1.5 Mbps DTS, and no HDMI, and no 1080p from component but from RGB.

Yes, it certainly will be nice when the day comes and we don't see stuff like that anymore.
