Default Blue-Violet Diode - Sony did a smart thing

From DigiTimes.com
Quote:

Global shortage of Blu-ray Disc pick-up heads expected to ease in 2007

As Nichia and Sony will increase production of blue laser diodes used in Blu-ray Disc (BD) drives and Sharp recently joining such production, the current global shortage of BD pick-up heads (PUHs), in which blue laser diodes is a key component, will gradually relax next year, according to sources in Taiwan's optical disc drive industry.

Nichia and Sony are currently the world's top two producers of blue laser diodes, but Nichia is suffering from a defect rate too high to meet global demand and Sony's output is going mainly for use in its PlayStation 3 (PS3) and BD burners, the sources indicated.

Sharp, in light of the large market potential, announced in November that it is producing blue laser diodes mainly for use in BD PUHs with an initial monthly capacity of 150,000 diodes, the sources pointed out. Sony, in order to attain a goal of selling six million PS3 units globally by March 2006, has to expand its production capacity of blue laser diodes as soon as possible, the sources noted.

Both Sony and Nichia declined to release details about their expansion of blue laser diode production, the sources said.
Didn't I say months ago that Sony did a smart thing? Eventually the excess production of their diodes can creep out to their own BD players, drives and other OEMs.

Indeed. It even appears that Sharp is getting into the Blu diode creation business, which even means more Blu-ray penetraton. Things are looking good going forward.

Anyone remember the analyst report stating a Blu-ray pyrric victory, and one of those factors was the quantity of blu-laser diodes and the production of them was on BDs side. Yup, this seems to complement just those claims.

Sony's Shirakawa factory is currently the most biggest blue LD supplier in the world, and almost all of produced blue LDs are used for PS3. Other blue LD users, such as Matsushita, Pioneer, Hitachi, Samsung, Sanyo, Toshiba are all dependent on Nichia's supply. By the end of year 2007, we may see some companies will start using Sharp's LD.

Given the fact like this, a total number of HD DVD drive will never, ever surpass the number of BD drives...

I easily expect BD drives to outnumber HD-DVD drives considerably within a year's time.

In fact, I'll go as far as saying: HD-DVD may not even be here in a year's time if present trends continue forward and upwards on the BD front.

Brilliant post Just pure truth and excellence.

No amount of FUD/spin from HD-DVD fanboys (like the dammned 'rdjam' :P) can even ruin or damage your statement.

Well done and well said

Yep..."large market potential"...Blu-ray ain't going anywhere soon. It has been quite noisy over at AVS. The HD-DVD fanatics are at a fevered pitch. That always happens when Blu-ray has a very good week. Actually Blu-ray has been having good weeks since November 17.

I would not put it past M$ as we know that Sharp and Sony will eventually be making the bulk of the Blue LD both of which are staunch BD supporters, HD-DVD will be left with a second-rate product from Nichia so M$ may provide financial assistance to Crapshiba to set up their own factory.
