Default Will this set-up give me 1080i video ?

Sorry if this has been rehashed before but I'm fairly new to surround sound and the more I read the more my head hurts. My current set-up;

Zenith 49" HDTV (5 years old - NO HDMI imputs or outputs. The best connection available is component.
Sony BDP S-300
DirecTV HD receiver.

I currently have both the Sony BPD S-300 and HD receiver connected directly to my tv with component connections. Eventually I will replace the tv with a newer full HD flat-screen , but for now the picture I am getting off of my 5 year old set is just amazing.

I want to add surround sound. After much reading I had settled on the Onkyo 605 receiver as my starting point. Would the proper way to connect all these components be: HDMI from Sony BPD S-300 to Onkyo 605; HDMI from HD receiver to Onkyo 605; and finally component connection from Onkyo 605 to my Zenith HD tv (no audio cables from the 605 to tv)? I read in one of the reviews for the 605 that it would not output a 1080 video signal if a component imput and HDMI output was used. So is the same true if the imput is HDMI and the output is component? If so, what is the best way to connect this setup untill I upgrade my tv? Thanks in advance for any light you can shine in my path.

unfortunately you cannot send HDMI video to the Receiver and then Component video to the TV...it doesnt work that way.

You're best off by just connecting the Component cable to the TV and using an Optical cable (or 5.1 analog as clyon mentioned) to the Onkyo.

However, if you had a PS3...you could send video over Component to the TV and audio over HDMI to the Onkyo. This way you would have HD picture with Lossless audio.

But as I said, for your situation you cannot send HDMI video and change it into Component video.

Thanks for the quick replies. That was what I was afraid the answer would be. I might just wait untill my tv kicks the bucket and upgrade everything at once (in the meantime saving up to buy the best equipment possible when I do).

My current tv's best is 1080i video, but as I said, the picture is stunning; esp. for a 5 year old set. Every time I go window shopping at the local stores I come away convinced that my tv has a better picture than what I'm seeing from the showroom sets.

thats all that really matters.

Does your TV have a DVI input? (whats the model #?)

No DVI imput either. It's a dinosaur among HDTVs. But it's a dinosaur with a darn good picture. Model # R49W36 Projection tv - the tubes are supposed to burn out about every 2 years, but mine's still running on the origionals.

This is how the audio for the R49W36 is described;
"You get stereo audio (with an impressive 15 watts per channel from AV sources or broadcast programming via Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS), which permits broadcasters to encode stereo audio within the video portion of TV programming signals. Not equipped with a surround receiver? Built-in Dolby Virtual Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from the set's 2 speakers or, when hooked up, from your stereo system."

In many showrooms, TVs and blu-ray players are not configured optimally. It is the best to go to a home theater specialty place to fully appreciate blu-ray quality.

This is pretty much spot on! The only thing I would add is that you either need to connect your audio using an Optical (S/PDIF) cable or a Digital Audio Coaxial Cable to get true 5.1 surround sound. Hooking up analog audio (red and white RCA jacks) to a surround sound receiver will only give you what is refered to as mixed surround sound.

The above poster did not mean red and white analog, they said "5.1 analog" which is similer to red and white except with a total of 6 inputs. 5.1 analog will get you "lossless" audio support.
