Default coaxial cable connection

I have a coaxial cable connection on the back of both my Sony receiver and my new HDMI dvd player.

The weird thing is that the coaxial connector looks just like an RCA connector. Does it carry audio or video, or both?

When I think of coax, I see the wire connector that leads from my wall to the TV, the in and out ports of my VCR, and the like.

Is this coaxial connector something new? Will one RCA cable work in it?

Thanks!

You are talking about Digital Coax. It is a sound platform as opposed to the Coax cable that feeds you cable from the cable company.

Over short distances, you will have the same sound quality as an Optical (toslink) cable.

Yeah, the RCA Cable should work no problem as you found out. the difference between a normal analog "RCA" and the "Digital" Coax is resistance.

Honestly, as you see in my sig I use studio monitors and therefore I use the more studio like XLR connectors instead of RCAs (Well I use a RCA to XLR cables hows that ) I use "digital cable to pass my "analog" signal. Because of the lower resistance in the Digital cables the signal gets there cleaner/clearer, but the biggest and most noticable difference comes in long runs, the digital cable does much better in that respect.

anyway a little possibly useful knowledge for ya.
