Default Universal Announces Specs for The Mummy

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has revealed the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Mummy', due to hit store shelves on July 22nd, a few weeks after the DVD re-release. The film, which has been digitally remastered, will be presented on a BD-50 with 2.35:1 1080p video and a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Extras include audio commentaries with the cast and crew, four featurettes ("Visual and Special Effects Formation", "An Army to Rule the World", "Building a Better Mummy", and "Unraveling the Legacy of the Mummy"), deleted scenes, and a storyboard comparison. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release will be Universal's "U-Control" in-movie experience and a picture-in-picture behind-the-scenes look into the making of 'The Mummy'.

Also included will be a sneak peak at the upcoming 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' and movie ticket offer.

Are we correct to assume the same specs and a new video encode for the other releases that day from The Mummy series?

Since I'm not a big fan of The Mummy, I'll only be renting this. I'm pretty sure it'll look and sound a lot better but I'll get bored of this movie quickly.

Well where audio is concerned that dts-ma track should beat the pants off the HD DVD's 1.5 Mbps Dolby Digital Plus track.

A/B anyone? I'll bet dollars that the DD+ track isn't so transparent anymore.

But it's good enough

I've owned this on DVD for approximately two years and have yet to watch it. I may be tempted to pick this up though . . . should be a visual/aural extravaganza

On July 22, we are getting:
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
The Scorpion King

I'll be getting the first two. The first is a guilty pleasure, and was quite a surprise "hit" in 1999.

I would put money that the dts-hdma is better. DD+ tracks, while capable and sound good, hardly ever match up with lossless tracks.

Former DUD boys on AVS are still claiming the Mummy movies looked great. Can't disagree more. If Universal remasters these, maybe they'll see for themselves.

Another poster mentioned a "new" Mummy series movie coming out later this year.

Is there any truth to that?

Also, what are the early odds given by the uninformed of a box set for this franchise?

I would prefer a complete box set to singles.

Feedback requested.........

No, but we have heard that the video is a NEW transfer. Kris Deering was the first to state that "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" would be getting a new encode (I don't remember if he ever said rather TSK would be or not), and the news posted by Josh on the front page today confirmed it.

A NEW BD TRANSFER!!!

They didn't specify the video codec though. Although I know first hand that VC-1 can look just as good as AVC, it has not been consistent enough for my liking. Therefore, I wonder why they withheld that important piece of info...

Inquiring minds want to know...
