Default Sony STRDG720 7.1 Audio Video Receiver

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...NNACATNQXQ9MY5

If I pick up this receiver, will I get full use out blu-ray/ps3/xbox 360 audio capabilities? I was thinking about getting this bad boy because...

It's cheap..
It's got 7.1.
It has 3 HDMI inputs,so I can hook up my PS3, Xbox360 and PC and put the video to my TV all through a single HDMI connection. - Right now I have to use an HDMI switch, and an optical switch for sound... and my xbox 360 can't get both surround sound and HDMI because the setup only allows the HDMI to be plugged in or the other cable that has an optical jack build into it. - Assuming this receiver will fix the problem and allow me to switch everything via the remote.

So basically I have 2 questions, because I'm really an audio newby. Will I be missing out on any important audio codecs, or will I be fully capable with high def surround sound?

Am I missing something? This seems like a killer deal for the price.

Speakers... I've never bought a lone receiver before. My 5.1 setup, which I'll probably be giving to my friend, came with the speakers. How do I go about this?

Thanks, any help appreciated.

Here this bad boy is better quality... and same price, going to look into that. Only 2 HDMI inputs, so have to use a switch between PC and the game systems, but no big deal.

But to answer your question, yes the Sony STR-DG720 would provide all audio codecs from the PS3. It is 7.1 PCM.

...you would be getting better quality from the Onkyo or Yamaha.

But they would all work and do what you need overall.

as for speakers, you could build your system up over time...which is probably the best option as speakers play an important role in audio reproduction.

But if you need a good cheap fix check these out...

Good advice, getting the Yamaha. Question though, my PC is currently setup with a DVI>HDMI cord going to my TV, and an optical going into my optical switch - and eventually my current receiver.

I know that the Yamaha will physically have an HDMI input and optical input, but will I be able to mix them together? Meaning get it to send the TV the HDMI while playing the optical?

I checked this POLK set out as well and looks great for the price. I noticed also that this Polk set is like the only 5.1 one that clearly states it will play nice with 6.1 and 7.1 systems.

Assuming you went with the Sony DG720 and if willing to spend $200-$300 more on speakers, what would you think of matching it with Sony speakers -- and going with their dual channel center SS-CN5000 and the SSF-5000 for fronts and the SS-B3000 for sides or rears?? Will this series of Sony speakers play nice with a 7.1 system?? Thanks crack

So even audio passes through the HDMI connection; you do not need a separate audio coax cable or something?? If so, you can not beat the price.

Well the audio from my PC doesn't pass through the HDMI, just the video.

And how are these for speakers?

Yes you can . I have it going two different ways depending on what I'm doing. For BD I'm coming out of my soundcards multichannel outputs to the Yamaha RX-V663's multichannel inputs. When I'm doing something else, I also have a coax connection out of my PC - I can operate it either way. You can do it no problem!

I have the Sony 5300es and I can combine any video input with any audio input. So you can combine like "Video 2 Optical" input with like "HDMI 3" input. You will probably get this feature on the Yamaha. Very easy to do with the XMB menu.

My initial question to you was regarding the actual Sony 720 receiver in that does the audio pass through the HDMI -- does anyone know this???? Because if audio passes through, this price is pretty sweet.

Regarding your link above, I would go with the Polk satellite system that crack recommended over this Onkyo bundle for sure.

I actually use Sony SS speakers in my setup.

Granted I know there are better out there, so I don't expect miracles...but for the price, they kick ass and rock the house.

Nice crack -- I am leaning towards a complete Sony setup. Just not sure if I am gonna get the 720 receiver or step it up to the 910.

Man the more I think about it, the more I want the 3 HDMI inputs, I know the Onkyo sounds better... but not using the switch is a surprisingly big deal to me. Maybe my priorities suck, I don't know... but neither the Onkyo 605 or Yamaha have a 3rd input and I know I'll regret needing a switch. What do you think is the best if I'm willing to throw down another 100 or so for something that'll give me a little better quality and have a 3rd input?

I believe so about the 720, with the audio passing through the HDMI, according to the list on AVS if I understand correctly.

The Sony STR-DG720 is 7.1 PCM capable through HDMI.

Just went ahead and ordered the Onkyo TX-SR705. If there's one thing people on this board(and nobody I know in real life) will understand, it's how frustrating it is to regret cheaping out on a wanted feature and regretting it later. Only question I have about the Polk speakers is what to do about the missing 2 speakers? I was looking at the Onkyo setup because it had them all - and now will be the same brand as my receiver, if that has any advantage(doubtful). Maybe the Polks just run circles in quality around the Onkyos, I have no idea.

+1 I was considering the Sony DG-720 but I knew that one day I might need the decoding of the TrueHD and the DTS-HD as well as the banana-plug capable receiver. I ended up getting the Onkyo 605, and couldn't be happier.
