Hell to the no. The quality is top notch and if your on PSN, you also get updates. That future proofs the heck outta the PS3. My picture is crystal clear.

Why would the quality of Blu-ray movies suffer? The PS3 is hands down the best Blu-ray player on the market. Sony wouldn't put a Blu-ray player in the PS3 if it wasn't the best.

You really need to provide much more information about your set-up before we can make a good recommendation. The PS3 is a good BD player but it has its flaws/downsides and is not for everyone. So, here are some questions for you:

What type of receiver do you have? Is it HDMI 1.3 with decoding capabilities for the hi-rez audio like TrueHD and DTS-MA? Does it have HDMI input at all?

Do you want BD profile 2.0 (i.e. "BD-Live" capability)? If not interested in profile 2.0, do you want profile 1.1 or will a basic profile 1.0 player suffice?

What type of TV do you have (e.g. 1080p, hdmi input, etc)?

Once you answer these questions, we can make some intelligent recommendations for you.

Not to mention there is no need for an ethernet port for said updates as well. You can download the firmware updates using a wireless LAN connection. If using the 2.0 Live function is something you are interested in, this is the best way of using it. Everything loads up much faster too.

There are plenty of people in other threads who have reported that the picture quality on BD of the PS3 is not as good as some stand alone units (e.g. Panasonic BD30 and BD50 players).

There will be many higher end players that will be better than the PS3, but none in it's price range..... PS3 won't be "the best" but it'll be the "best under $1,000"

To say that the PS3 is the best player on the market is crazy. For under $400 YES MAYBE IT IS. But for someone to tell me that it is better than anything is full of s?i*. Better than Denon 2500 or 3800 or Marantz 8002 or Pioneer Elite. Give me a break. Again under 400 I may believe you.

Ugh.

"PS3! PS3!" Do you PS3 fanboys ever stop to think that maybe that really isn't the best player for everyone???

For me, the PS3 is a TERRIBLE choice in players. But I have highly recommended it to my best friend as it would meet his needs and serve him well. But you people have to grow up and stop being mindless PS3 drones.

Do those have video chat, hard drives for video and photos, allow internet browsing, play video games, etc...? Nope. Just because you pay a lot doesn't mean its better.

While I agree the PS3 is not for everyone and what you purchase should be based on your needs - that list is pretty lame. About the only thing that has any merit, is the 173 watts of power it uses. Never realized that. I knew it sucked some juice, but did not realize it was that much.

Wonder if Sony can fix it so it does not draw that much when watching just a movie!

Got a thread up about this but no response. Is the Phillips Bp9000 worth $200? I already have a PS3 but looking to grab this at walmart on clearance for a second bedroom bd player. Is it a deal or no
