If he can wait about a month, I recommend the Sony 570.

Its actually for a lady friend who is late on her Valentine's Day gift to her husband and she wants to get him a bluray player, so waiting a month is out unfortunately...

I guess it would depend on what type of features he would like

EDIT: Many people are still under the influence you need to spend $400 to get a good BD player which is no longer the case.

Great players...

If he has alot of SD DVD's then the oppo is worth it. Does he want Netflix, etc? There are other players that are solid and cheaper.

I agree. I paid $100 for my JVC and it has been the best BD player i have owned. And I own 2 PS3's. I don't care about netflix since everything else I own can do it.

I would also say the Oppo players should be on the top of the list. However if you want any of the fancy streaming or built in Wifi, you will have to look elsewhere.

For non streaming players, I would def. look into the Oppo 83 and 80, Pioneer 320 and 23, and the Denon 2010. They will probably be the highest quality players in that $300-400 range, both of performance and build quality.

Someone else will have to help you if you want a streaming capable player.

Its a tough call here haha. That Pioneer 23FD is really nice... but at the same time the Oppo 80 is good for the money... any other suggestions?

Another vote for 23FD. Picture quality is on par with the best and it's one of the better performer for music listening. It's more expensive at full price than the Oppo. But if you can find it on sale, it's definitely worth it. As an option, you can get the similar 320 on sale for around $200.

Are they also interested in a home-theater? A few months ago, I paid $379.95 for the Panasonic SC-BT300 home theater sound system. It includes a receiver with blu-ray player built in, and also has a 7.1 sound system; I really enjoy it. The price for the system fluctuates up and down a lot. One week it's $429.95, then it's $379.95, and then it's $452.10 the next. The current price is $452.10 on Amazon (shipping is included.) The one thing that I would recommend buying, in addition to this system, is a 1 or 2 gb memory card because this blu-ray player has virtually no internal memory. This will help out when the blu-ray movie downloads additional content from the internet.

Get the BDP-80. not only a great player, but you save some cash (could be put towards something else in combination) AND if he has any friends into HT it will certainly give him cachet when they ask him what player he has and says "I have an OPPO!"
