My Sony Playstation 3 40GB model died today. It was a new 40GB series the quiet one, about 4 months old. It just stopped working. Red indicator light, unit would power on, and no video at all, under any circumstance, and or via any output method. Since Sony has just discontinued the 40GB model, and replaced it, in all stores with new stock, I got a brand new 80GB model in it's place. Sony has released an 80GB model for $399.99. I had the waranty from Best Buy, so for the few extra bucks, $60 I think for the two year complete coverage, I got a brand new PS3! So check out my poll and let me know what you think. Are extended service and replacment plans worth it?

I got my 60 gb unit from Best Buy with the extended warranty. It expires in 2010. No problems yet, but I do worry if it ever does break cause the 60's are no longer made.

The new 80's DO NOT have BC. Only the PS1 games work.

This is precisely why the manufacturer is the way to go. My launch 60GB kicked the bucket about 2 months ago. I sent it for repair through Sony and I got my original unit back with all new innards. The replacement plans are a waste because all that the reseller can do is offer you what is on their shelves... which is obviously not the same unit that you purchased.

Take into consideration, that I don't play any games on my PS3's so backwards compatability is not an issue at all. Free hard drive upgrade as far as I was concerned. The plan is a conveniance issue, I can go and swap it out for a new one that's all I want. Not having to pay to ship it, wait for the repair, pay if required for a repair out of waranty, and then pay for the shipping in return, and be out my Bluray player the whole time. I guess in my opinion it's worth the fast exchange. But I do value your opinions and def understand your issues. So COOL keep it up the more input the better!
