Cool METALLICA ! Smart Marketing Move !

So I picked up Death Magnetic on a Friday ? Very Interesting ! So with the advent of Guitar Hero and Rock band, correct me if I'm wrong but is this the first big break from the standard Tuesday release date ? Will other bands follow suit ? I wonder what revenue increases this Friday release will have vs a Tuesday release for cd sales and downloads? Friday release date.... could = beer, parties, and the start to a great weekend vs Tuesday, when it is a stretch to stay up late and get to work the next day.

By the way the CD kicks butt! Good to see them get back to their Master and Justice days ! I have given a spin for the third time now !

It's definitely a marketing ploy, but it's still pandering and comes off as desperate to me. I'll give them one more try, but Justice was 20 years ago and they haven't come close to being that good since.
I know of only one rock band who has been able to stay vibrant and true to themselves for 20+ years, all the while cranking out one mindmelting album after another.
THE MELVINS

Although I like the Melvins ! I have to agree Slayer have not changed,..... made a detour to a degree, but still evil hard after 20 years.

agreed, but have you heard the "new" Slayer from '06(Christ's Illusion, maybe)? Sounds like they're running out of riffs; they're all fast and heavy, but not very memorable. Meanwhile Melvins keep getting better and all the side bands and the ipecac gang are a great distraction. Nothing wrong with doing different things if your M.O. from the beginning was to mess with people. I mean in the early 80's when everyone (including the melvins) were playing super fast, they slowed everything down to a crawl and started embracing more of their metal/sabbath side. People hated it, but deep down they knew they loved them melvins for doing what needed to be done. Quite possibly the most underrated, but yet most influential band of the past 30 years.

Back on topic. So what do folks think about the revenue that a Friday release date for a CD/Download combo will have for future CD releases ? For games like Rock Band and GH

Maybe Metallica ran out of riffs in the 90's. I like Death Magnetic better than Justice. The mixing and mastering on Justice was crap. No bass. Ruins it for me. Rick Rubin is Midas when it comes to producing.

As far as the topic goes...Very few titles can pull this off. I am not sure if the Guitar Heros of the world would be a big enough deal. The thing is, people will buy GHIV, RB2, COD5, GoW2, Metallica, or whatever regardless of the release day. The sales of Madden would not have suffered or gained because of a Monday, Thursday, or even a Sunday release (which would have been awesome because of football being a Sunday thing).

Slayer has definitely been around as long and at their best (Reign in Blood, SoH, Diabolus, GHuA) are certainly just as, if not more "crushing" than the Melvins, but the sheer quantity, diversity, and irreverence of the Melvins sets them apart from almost everyone else.
Maybe our love of Slayer and Melvins should coalesce into a big FANTOMAS discussion?
Quite possibly the craziest sh@t ever.
Ever.

Have you even heard the Melvins? Have you heard the 6 albums they've released in the time it's taken Slayer to put out one very mediocre record (Christs Illusion)? Love Slayer, but they're a one trick pony that's fading pretty quick.

There have been other releases before on a non-tuesday. Not a whole lot, but there have been others.

The cd does kick some serious butt. Much better than their St Anger CD. It is a cross between Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All, and this being the 21st Century. Actually looking forward to seeing them on tour in comparison to their last album. As for the whole Tuesday vs Friday thing. Metallica has done this type of move in the past. There have been a few groups in the past that have done this type of move, Guns n Roses to name one of them with their release of the Use Your Illusions cd's.

Now an album that you all really need to check out is the new Priest "Nostradamus". This album is really good. I know for some it takes getting used to, but really fine work. As long as you realize that this is a conceptual piece and really listen to it, you realize how brilliant it is.

Keep the metal movement going!

I have been tempted to pick up "Nostradamus" but have been scared. I am an old Priest fan from the Screaming for Vengence days. Which I still feel is some of their best work. IMO only ! So you think I should put me fear aside ???

Scooby Blu - I got to tell you I am a huge Priest fan that I have them tattooed. So if that let's you know my dedication to the Priest, hopefully not tainted. I am a huge fan of the old Priest, have all of their work, including their solo stuff (Halford and Tipton). I Liked Angel of Retribution alot, which was the first with Halford back in the band, but I too am a huge fan of Screaming. I think it was a kick butt album. However, I love them all. This cd is not Super fast and at times is very slow, with piano (for those that remember the old Priest on Rocka Rolla thru Sin After Sin, then it's nothing new), but all in all it rocks. This is a rock opera and a story about Nostradamus and his life. This cd has been played almost daily, as I say that at times been played multiple times a day. I say give it a shot.

It is a double and Walmart has it for $13.88, Best Buy has it for $16.99. I am now the proud owner of three copies. One of them is the book copy and the other two are just the standard cd versions. Had to get a second regular copy, just got Priest to sign the other one. Great guys.

Enjoy!

I read an article in the New York Post on Sunday that said the Friday release date was made to have one singular GLOBAL release date since they release on Fridays in Europe. (Maybe our Euro brothers can clear that up here.)

In any case, it didn't really work out that way because a lot of stores ended up releasing in on Wednesday in Europe.

Agreed, except in the UK where we usually have our releases on a Monday. The majority of Europe has theirs on a Friday.

How is the sound quality on the cd? I'm seeing lots of complaints about compression ruining the sound quality at loud volumes.... If that's the case then I'll skip this no matter how good it is. I guess a new alblum like ...And Justice For All with good sound quality was just too much to ask for

...And Justice For All was a terrible album, sound quality wise.

There is some distortion, but I think that it is from the guitar effects more than the transfer. A mp3 of this album would ruin much of the glory. Rubin recorded this to tape, so there is some of that effect. It is not anywhere as neat and tidy as most modern recordings.
