I have a problem. Should I upgrade to an Hd receiver or not?

I have be torn between upgrading my old Yamaha recveiver to the RX-V663, but I am wondering is it really worth it? The system I have now sounds pretty good throught the optical audio hookup and I know that I am not getting the HD sound but is it that much better? I have never actually heard DolbyTrueHD or the DTS HD formats in person. So I have no reference to between the non HD audio and the HD audio. How much better is the HD audio? Please help.

Not sure what you consider "Mid-level Yamaha 5.1" but if they're a speaker package from a previous Yamaha HTIB, then I'd say just stick with the receiver you have..... If you can scrape together some cash to possibly upgrade the R/L/C right now, in addition to the Receiver....... then you'll really open up your listening experience...... and then upgrade-itis sets in, and you'll replace everything else before you know it.

Yeah, but the key is what Yamaha receiver do you currently own?

I recently upgraded from a Yamaha HTR-5960 7.1 channel receiver, which sounded wonderful, to a Yamaha HTR-6080 (RX-V861) in order to pick up lossless audio and video upscaling for older components. The difference in sound quality going from DTS and DD to lossless audio was quite noticable, surprisingly so. The rest of your system and setup will factor in, but for me, the difference in detail, depth, and overall richness of sound was immediately apparent.

Like the Man said, it depends on your setup. Also keep in mind that not all Blu-rays are made the same so some movies' HD audio will sound significantly better than others while some just are flat.

For when its good, it is extremely good and a very noticeable difference.
