Default Cerwin Vega Speakers

I am getting a a pair of Cervin Vega RE25 this evening for my game room but cannot find much about them online. Are they pretty good speakers?

I hate to break it to you, but those are not very good speakers in terms of sound quality. Cerwin Vega's are bass heavy (muddy bass at that), and they don't offer much detail or extension. My old roommate had a 5.1 channel setup with RE25's up front, and it was a bit dreadful.

You can do much better for the money. You might consider checking out Polk Audio or Klipsch as better alternatives.

Thanks so much for your response. I would have to get them and be dissappointed in them. They are going to be used strickly for music. I already got a nice 7.1 setup in the movie room.

Yeah, its kind of sad to hear this. Cerwin Vega used to make terrific speakers. I've heard that the company was sold some years back, and that the quality is just not there with the majority of their speakers now. They've always been bass heavy, but not muddy at all in my past experience. Just plain sad. I'm not a big Polk fan, but they do make a good speaker...very versatile for music and home theater. Check out the monitor series over on Newegg. They're always on sale for very good prices and usually with free shipping. JR Music also has good prices from time to time.

They are great speakers for irritating your neighbors. They can be loud and kick ass.

About 30 years ago, I listened to them and I liked them, but I don't know about their recent speakers.

OK pops, how old are you...

My brother has some CV's and I can't stand them.... he bought some Def Techs Pro monitor 800's for surrounds and its sad how much better those sound then the Vegas he is using..... Not to mention he has them with a Klipsch Center....

OP if you just want some 2 channel speakers, I have Energy C-300s that are great for 2 channel.... go to www.wwstereo.com and they have them for about $250 for the pair, I don't think you would be disappointed at all. Or audioadvisor.com has them in Cherry if you prefer.

I used to have a pair or RE-30s and thought they were pretty good, but they are 4 ohm speakers, and can handle a lot of power. Unfortunately I never had an amp back then that could give them the power they really wanted, but I thought they sounded ok for what they were.

Default Cerwin Vega Speakers

I have a pair of Cerwin Vega VS-120 speakers collecting dust in my garage. I can't seem to find any specs on these. Are they any good?

They still work great, but I have had them for about 15+ years now. I stopped using them a few years ago because they were too wide to fit in my entertainment niche. That is why I went with the Infinity fronts, because of their smaller footprint. Now I have timbre matched those with an Infinity center.

Should I use these in place of the Klipsch S-1's I use for my surrounds or sell them at my garage sale this weekend. If I sell them, any ideas as to how much they are worth?

Not sure if this helps you but you don't get alot of positive responses on the CV stuff.

Here are my RE-30's..... I'm going to use them as part of an outdoor-theater-5.1 for the 4th of July.... after that, I'd probably trade them for a couple of blu-rays they sound TERRIBLE, and there was a time when I thought they were fantastic

The people raving about these speakers are saying "Crystal Clear Mids and Highs" etc etc... and also saying that CV is the "Leader in all things audio" etc etc...

Although the prior is subjective...... the latter is just ignorance. Most of the responses are joking about the cops being called, or "sneaking them" to a new home when moving to become the envy of the neighborhood etc.. etc.. etc...

Pretty juvenile reviews from people who probably don't have a lot of experience with anything other than the speakers they have.....

Heck, the first review says "BASE" is the speaker's best strength

I like an Acid/Base=neutral speaker

Last year i found a pair of the VS-125 in a yard sale. the guy wanted $250.00 for them . I just scimed alook at them and said you want get that around here, Will you take a $100.00 for them , they are so out dated,He said no way , He would go down to $200.00 , I passed. This was like at 10.AM in the morning , Our town had a huge town sale going on , I was installing a deck at home and need 4x4 so I went to the hardware store and saw , well now it was around 4PM and I need another 4x4 so I went buy his sale, I see all of it was pretty much gone except the speakers, My son was with me & I went buy got my 4x4 on the way home I stoped , and said I see you still got them , I did noticed a paper on them but didnt go look , He shook his head and said Yeah you can have them for a $100.00 so I laughed, went over and looked them over some more, they were dusty and one of the base'es was broke off one , and the grill wer dirty with alittle stain on them , He said they wer big party speakers for him , and they still worked good , I saw the grills had some broken plastic also , I said I dont know , tell you what I'll give you $75.00 for them , he said $80.00 I said $75.00 he took it , and also i said I going right home and try them if they dont work I get my money back , he agreed , took them home unloaded them , MY wife said what the 4ell.. LOL , Took them in and tested real quick , they work , sounded okay , put them in the corner, went back to working on the deck, later that night i took them all apart checked cones , maganets , croossovers ETC,, cleaned them all up . reglued the grills and cleanthe stanis off them , knocke the othe base riser off the other one, grabbed some contact paper wood looking , covered the bottoms with it , put them all back together and hooked them up , Now i know these are party speakers, that why you see them in bars and so forth.. I bought these to resale. or trade,,,LOL ,any ways my son had some Bass testers cds, so we let them rip , at REFFERENCE LEVEL.. it was so fun , these suck for detail but play loud for out door parties or for a bar,...it was crazy , My wife came out and said to me....THEY will be GONE in the morning right ?????... I said yes ,, My son said he wanted them for his Birthday ,,Silly kid speakers are for grown ups....Okay sorry , this was funny at the time , any way I had a couple of guys in mind at work , I only buy something if I pretty sure I can turn it around and make a profit, thats how I buy my stuff for my system... So i should them to Dennis, he was looking for some big outdoor party speakers & also for his Barr in the Basement,, So any ways these things are so huge only one fit in the trunk of the wifes car & one in the back seat,, Showed them to Dennis, and he said what you want for them , well he was short on cash , and he said he could do payments for them so the wife didnt find out what he spent, I tought about and and said okya , I asked $300.00 for the pair, thinking he would talk me down ,,, you know , He never did , he actually said he could pay me $50.00 for 7 weeks , thats $350.00 , & said the extra $50.00 is for waiting ,, so wow... this was cool , I spent $75.00 & made $275.00 in profit.... & you know what He use's them every weekend for parties and is still very happy with them.....So hey some one is always looking for something,,,

Although Cerwin Vega is not my cup of tea, and depending on who you ask. Some of their speakers are no worse or better than some of stuff in the same price range out there.

Look for reviews like this one of the Cerwin Vega CLS-215 from SoundStage. It got favorable reviews here.

http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/c...ega_cls215.htm

Also these same speakers got favorable reviews in the March 2009 issue of The Absolute Sound magazine, issue 191 , pages 80-82. May be available online. Both of these places do reviews of high-end gear so who knows.......

A year or two back (I don't know the name of the speakers) Cerwin Vega was getting favorable reviews for a 5.1 satellite speaker package. I'm sure the reviews are still online if you look up the name of the speakers.

These types of speakers do best when powered by a low power amp since there are efficient speakers. Maybe throw in a low powered tube amp and see what happens. The main thing is and is absolutely critical is placement, which can be tricky. Just depends on what you like I guess and there are many good alternatives which may be more satisfactory overall.

The one thing Cerwin Vega does extremely well is car audio subwoofers, especially the Stroker series. Which are high-end subs. Maybe someone would like to use a Stroker for a DIY home theater subwoofer. Just know they require tons of power to make them dance and also last time I checked they required a huge ported box. So if you can provide that you will have one hell of a sub.

Like I said not for me but to each their own !!!

That's where I got mine

Nothing like a store who will give an 18 year old punk like me a $3,000 line of credit....... Fortunately I paid it all off at no interest..... but either way.... if I had that $3,000 back right now, I'd be pretty happy !

I bought a T.V., Receiver, Monster Cables (yeah me ) and that pair of RE-30s, a center to match (not sure what it is) a pair of RE-12's (I think that's what they are) for surrounds.... pair of stands, and the 15" down-firing subwoofer they had...... I remember going in there and just cranking up the sub..... and then I thought I was king of the world when I went in there and grabbed the big flat cart thing, and started loading it up!

A friend had a pair of the 10" CV towers, and a 15" sub... and we would daisy-chain two receivers together and run one cd player to all of the speakers, and both subs when we had parties......
Eventually a buddy got a huge D.J. setup, and we stopped using these though.

Those were the days alright!
